I gave Jaxon a nod. “You get anything out of him?”

“Not really.” He looked at Gabe and gave him a wary smile. “How is she?”

“She’s sleeping. She isn’t hurt as bad as we first thought.”

“Good. I know her name is Mackenzie. She is a shifter from the North pack and was trying to avenge her sister because this bastard had her killed.”

Gabe growled, ready to pounce. I gripped his arm. “Gabe, no.” he turned to face me, his eyes pure wolf. “Remember what you said.”

He blinked a few times to clear his vision. “Answers first, then I get to avenge my mate and her sister.”

  “Yes.”

Simon turned wide eyes to me. “You can’t hurt me you won’t get your answers if you do.”

“I don’t intend to hurt you physically.” I said. I focused on his mind, pushing through his terror at being our captive, the hate towards Jaxon and our pack. Layer upon layer of hate clouded his mind and it’s hard to find anything. I’ve never been so deep like this, usually thoughts are just there, and I take them. It’s as if he is blocking me, as if he has a way of hiding his feelings. Frustration starts to set in as I feel myself struggling to find what I want to know. I close my eyes and take a deep breath, allowing my body to relax. I probe again, this time a doorway appears and his thoughts just pour out.

“Five hybrids are out there. Each one taken from a different pack.”

“Fuck.” Jaxon growled as I pulled out of Simons head. He’s whimpering because he knows I got everything we need and we don’t need him anymore.

“Do you have the answers we need?” Jaxon asked.

“Yes. You can do whatever the hell you want with him now.”

Gabe stepped closer to Simon. “I want to rip him into tiny pieces for what he’s done to Mackenzie, but I don't hit things that are weaker than me.”

“We’ll lock him up for now.” Jaxon said. “None of us have the stomach to hurt such a fucking pussy.”

“When Mackenzie is better maybe we’ll let her shoot him.” I grinned.

“Not a bad idea. A life for a life.” Jaxon said. “Let’s lock him up then. I’ve had enough for today.”

“Haven’t we all.” I said as I headed out the door. Jaxon and Gabe followed me as I walked to the house and straight into Jaxon's office. Gabe closed the door behind us.

“We have five hybrids out there alone with no support?” Jaxon asked.

“It’s not a great thing. They could be dangerous. We need to find them.”

“I agree. But how will we do that?”

“When the hybrids escaped from the testing facility they were five miles from here. We can find the lab and see if there are any leads there. Simon doesn’t know where they went.”

“I’ll call a pack meeting and see who wants to join the search. At the moment we have no knowledge of their state of minds so we need to treat them as if they are a threat.”

“Ok I’ll help, but I need to make sure my mate is safe first.” Gabe said.

Jaxon shook his head. “No, you should sit this one out. Mackenzie doesn’t know what’s happened or that she's just met her mate. She’s going to feel a little lost and she needs you.”

“Thanks.” Gabe said and there was no mistaking the relief in his voice. He would have done his duty even though he didn’t want to leave Mackenzie. That’s loyalty. I feel for him, he has a long road to travel with his mate but at least she already knows about our world.

“I know how it feels to have a mate remember.”

“You’ll call me if you need me?” Gabe asked.

Jaxon gave him a nod and I watched him hurry from the room.

“I’ll lead the search for them.” I said. Jaxon opened his mouth to disagree and I held up my hand. “Jaxon, you have no idea what you’re up against.”

“Neither do you. They could hurt you.”

“They will sense I’m like them. I’ll have more of a chance to explain to them. Besides, I’m stronger than you.” I’m not bragging. It’s the truth. The pack will be no match for them. I wouldn’t be against five of them but at least I knew what to expect with their abilities.

“Ok, when do you want to do this?”

“In a couple of days. I want to spend some alone time with Milly.”

“She will want to go with you.”

“I know. I think I’m going to take her with me.”

“You are?” He asked in surprise.

“Who best to keep her safe but her mate?”

“Sierra is pregnant.” Jaxon announced with a grin.

  “Milly told me. Congrats man.”

  “Thanks. Talk about fast moving.”

  “Fate is a funny thing.”

“So you believe in it now?”

“Someone once told me that what happened to me is fate; I think he might be right.”

“He is. I’m glad you're home now, Deacon. I’ve missed you.”

“I’ve missed you too. Being without the pack has been hard but I think I needed the space, if only to realise what I was missing.”

  “You went through a lot.”

“I did. It’s quite a shock to discover that as a hybrid I’m stronger, faster and have a mind reading power that gives me the ability to look inside someone else’s head without even trying.”

He looked shocked for a second then he grinned. “It comes in handy I’m sure.”

“It does with Milly. I’m going to see her now. She misses me.”

  “You can sense that?”

“She’s telling me through our connection. She knows I’m close.”

  “Wow.”

  “It’s quite a nice ability.”

“Go to her and I’ll wait for you to call me.”

“I’m taking her to my cabin.”

“I thought you would be. By the way, one of the guys told me that there’s a cottage up for sale just across the river.”

“I’ll check it out. Milly wants to be close to Sierra.”

  “Sierra will be pleased.”

“I know. Milly wants babies. I’m hoping it won’t take too long to make it happen.”

“Do you think your children will be like you?”

“Milly has already developed some of my abilities; I think our children will as well. I’m not worried; we’ll guide them through it.”

“I’m impressed. Milly has been a good influence on you.”

“She has.” I admitted.” Without her I don’t think I would have come back.”

“I’m even more grateful to her then.”

I slapped his shoulder as I walked past him. “Take care of yourself and your mate. I'll ring you soon.” I said as I opened the door.

“Good luck with the baby making.” Jaxon chuckled as I closed it behind me.

I could feel Milly, she’s happy. I headed in her direction and stood at the open door watching her. She’s sitting on the sofa, smiling at something Sierra has said and I grin. Something settles in my stomach, the worry I have for the hybrid’s disappears as the love I feel for Milly takes over. I walked in and she turned to stare at me with a smile. “You’re back.”

“I am. Say goodbye to Sierra.” I ordered her as I stopped where she’s sitting. She lifted confused eyes to mine and I smiled. “Say goodbye.” I repeated.

“Bye Sierra.” She giggled as I lifted her into my arms and tucked her over my shoulder. Sierra is staring at us open mouthed as I walk out the door and towards the front of the house. Jaxon walked out of his study and gave me a grin as he hurried over to the front door to open it wide. “Bye Milly. Have fun.” He called as he closed the door behind us. I could hear him chuckling as I kept walking not breaking stride.

“Deacon, what are you doing?” Milly asked me breathlessly.

  “I thought that was obvious.”

“Well, you could let me walk.”

“I’m taking you home and making love to you for the next two days.”

“I’m not going to complain about t
hat.” She giggled.

We make it to my car and I lower her to the ground making sure she is steady on her feet. “I missed you.”

“I can tell.” She lifted her hand to my cheek. “You’re going after the hybrids aren’t you?”

  “Yes.”

  “I’m coming with you.”

  “I know.”

“You don’t mind? I thought I would have to fight you.”

“The safest place for you to be is with me.”

“Yes it is. I love you my hybrid badass.”

“I love you too my sweet mate. Now let’s get home and make love until we can’t move. I ache for you.”

“Hurry then and I’ll take care of you.” She grinned as she opened the door and climbed in. I closed the door with a click and hurried around to the driver’s side to climb in. I stuck the keys in the ignition and started the car, waiting until she’s buckled up before setting off.

“Put your foot down darling. I need you.” she ordered.

I inhaled deeply. “I can scent that you do.” I groaned.

I inhaled again, a growl slipping out, as I smell something else. Slowing the car down, I pulled up at the side of the road.

“What’s wrong?” She asked as she looked around. “Are we being followed?”

“No.” I whispered. “You’re pregnant. I can scent the baby.”

“You can… but how? We only made love last night.” She said in awe.

“I know. I don’t know how it’s possible but I can. Milly, we are going to have a baby.”

  “I can’t believe it.”

  “I can. Its fate.”

“Fate.” she agreed. She slipped her hand into mine and squeezed gently. “You’re going to be an amazing daddy.” she whispered tearfully.

  “Baby, thank you.”

“What are you thanking me for?”

“For giving me you. For giving me a family.”

She leaned over and kissed my cheek. “I love you, Deacon. Don’t ever thank me for something you deserve. You were made for me and I was made for you.”

“I couldn’t be any happier if I tried.”

  “Our life is complete.”

“Yeah.” I said as I unbuckled us both and lifted her into my lap. Cupping her face in my hands, I caught her gaze before kissing her until both of us were gasping for breath. I lifted her back into her seat, buckled her up again, and set off. “Let’s go home.”

“Home.” She said. “I’m ready for some peace and quiet before the next chapter of our life starts.”

“At least we know it won’t be boring.” I grinned.

She snorted. “I don’t think anyone could ever accuse our life of being boring.”

Three and a Half Months Later

  Deacon

“Wow. We found them.” Milly grinned as she looked around her.

“Rather they found us.” I chuckled.

We’re in the meadow close to our house having a picnic. We’re celebrating because we’ve just seen our baby on the ultrasound and it’s healthy. Milly is healthy as well, she’s blooming; her whole self is radiating happiness. Ever since we announced our pregnancy to the pack, we’ve had visitors every day. When we moved to the new house nearer to Sierra and Jaxon, it only got worse until we had to start going for walks just to get some alone time. That’s how we found this place; it’s peaceful and full of wildflowers, which Milly loves. I’d just been about to lay Milly down and have my wicked way with her when I’d sensed them. There was no threat; I couldn’t sense anything other than their curiosity.

  “Hello,” Milly greeted them.

“They all stared at her before smiling.

“You're Deacon?” The dark haired one asked as he stepped closer to us.

“I am.” I said as I stood up pulling Milly with me and wrapping her in my arms.

“We heard a hybrid was looking for us. That hybrid is you.” he stated.

“We had problems with a rogue vampire. When we caught him, he told us about you.”

“This vampire is his name Simon?”

“Yes it was. Emphasis on was.”

  “He’s dead.”

“He managed to slit his own throat while in our custody.”

“He did not come back from that?”

“He would have done, but he’d attacked my friend Gabe’s mate before we captured him so we let Gabe have the satisfaction of staking the bastard.”

The hybrid nodded. “That is fair.”

“We thought so. Can I ask your name?”

“I am Zeke. These are Freddie, Jacob, Levi, and Will.” He said as he pointed to the men around us.

  “Nice to meet you.”

“Same.” Zeke inhaled. “What is that scent?” he stepped closer to us inhaling again and I tensed ready for anything. Milly gripped my shirt, holding it tightly in her fist.

“Relax, I mean no harm. I’m curious. She is with child?”

  “Yes, my child.”

“How can this be? We thought we would be sterile because of the different cells our bodies now hold.”

“It happened the day we mated.” Milly said with a smile. “It’s possible it could happen for you all too.”

“We can only hope, small one.”

“Do you want to meet our pack? Everyone has been waiting to find out more about you all.”

“Are they a threat to us?”

  “No.” I denied.

He stared at me for a long moment before turning to communicate silently with his friends. “Then we will take you up on your offer if only to see what it is like to be surrounded by a pack again.”

Milly sniffed and I looked down to see tears in her eyes. “Baby?”

“I can feel their sadness. They’ve been through so much.”

“You’re soft hearted, female. We are ok. We have each other.”

  “Do you miss pack life?”

“Sometimes, but most packs wouldn’t understand us. At least yours already has knowledge of hybrids so we won’t be treated as freaks.”

“Where have you been hiding?” I asked. We’d looked in so many places and had no joy. I’d always managed to scent them, but I could never follow the trail.

“We sensed you before you came to the lab and we moved fast. We didn’t know if you were a threat and we didn’t want to risk it.”

“I can understand that. Why did you come to find us?”

“We found your note. We’ve been watching you for a few weeks to see what you were like.”

“That makes me feel uncomfortable that I couldn’t sense you were close.”

“We used the perfume the vampires had. H.S made it so they had a steady supply in the lab. You were in no danger, we would never hurt innocents.”

  “I’m no innocent.” I denied.

“You have done things you are not proud of but if you changed them, you would not be here with your mate, you would be dead.”

“That is true, Deacon.” Milly said as she moved out of my arms. “We’ll pack this away and take you home. They’ll be pleased to meet you. We’ve all been worried that you could be dangerous, it’s nice to find out that you’re not.”

  “We are.” He warned her.

“I’m aware of that but you aren’t a threat.”

“We would not attack unless we have to defend ourselves.”

  “Neither would Deacon.”

“I’m sorry we interrupted your alone time. You should tell your friends that you need space.”

“We don’t want to hurt their feelings. They mean well.” I said unsurprised that he knew why we were out here.

“At least if you did that you would be able to make love to your mate in your own bed.” He grinned.

I looked down at Milly to see her cheeks were adorably red. I brushed my lips against hers. “Come on baby let’s take them home. If the pack fusses over them we might get a few hours peace.”

“Let’s hurry then while my morning sickness has stopped.”

  “Morning
sickness?” Zeke frowned. “But its afternoon.”

  “Tell that to our baby.”

  “Is this a hybrid thing?”

  “No, just a baby thing.”

  “Oh.”

“It’s not so bad.” Milly told him. “Deacon takes care of me.”

“He is very lucky to have you.”

“I couldn’t agree more. She is a miracle.” I said and I meant every word. Never a day goes by that I don’t count myself lucky to have survived an attack that should have killed me. Finding my mate and having a baby on the way made all the pain and grief of losing my old life all worth it. I may not be able to shift anymore but my wolf is still with me, I’m still part of my pack and I have my family back. I have Milly to thank for that and I will be forever grateful.
