  Dedication

I would like to dedicate this book to my boyfriend, who always stood by my side.

  Chapter One

The loud buzzer went off, making me release the heavy sigh I was holding in for longer than an hour now. It was finally lunch break now and staying in that classroom only depressed me more, since that low grade of mine decorated the A4 paper as it were mocking the living hell out of me. It wasn’t that low though, I could score higher next time... maybe...

“We should study together next time.” my friend, Alyssa, joined me as I walked to the cafeteria.

My lips widened into a grateful smile, “Yes, I probably need that. Thank you!”

She shot me back a smile and we looked ahead of us again. It was always during lunch break that the hallways just suddenly packed up with students. I know it’s something obvious, but you always noticed different kinds of people. I mostly am the quiet type, since I don’t really trust people easily. Alyssa and I became friends a few months ago. I didn’t want to talk to her at first, but after our history assignment together, she continued pestering me and after a while I just gave in and gave her what she wanted. I’m glad she continued pestering me though, because now I have another one of the most amazing friends ever. I opened my mouth to say something to Alyssa, but then my gaze met his. He was leaning against the lockers, holding a packet of cigarettes, something I really hated. I frowned, wondering if he was actually going to smoke that inside the building. Hunter Adams wasn’t exactly the school’s bad boy, since he quite distanced himself from students and didn’t really interact with them, but I have heard some very bad rumors about him, such as him being a murderer and starting fights with people, you know, the usual stuff you hear about bad boys. Alyssa told me to stay away from him, since his reputation wasn’t all rainbow and sunshine (yes, Alyssa, because I'll just randomly walk up to him and talk to him as if he’s a long lost friend), and to be honest, I did feel some dislike towards him in the beginning, but then I realized that I shouldn’t really judge him based off of rumors spread by people who don’t even know him. He was famous for his tattoos, but not because he has tattoos means he’s a bad person. And to be honest, I may not talk a lot, but I have to admit that Hunter is one of the hottest guys I have ever seen, if I exclude all the hot guys I see on TV and magazines of course. He had black hair that was perfectly styled, blue almond shaped eyes that looked tired, but piercing at the same time, very delicate and surprisingly healthy-looking skin, and his tattooed body only made him look more attractive than he already was. Though, he always did hide it.

Shut up, Zoe!, I scolded myself. Don’t look at him, don’t fantasize about him, don’t even think about him! Just focus on school.

Alyssa and I reached the cafeteria. We bought our food and took our usual spot, on a bench under a tree that was right in the middle of the school’s complex. We never really left school during breaks, we just hung out here until we had to leave or attend our next class.

“Dude, did you read our English book yet? Our play is in two weeks.” Alyssa sighed.

“I’m halfway through,” I said as I took a bite from my sandwich.

As I did so, my gaze locked with Hunter’s. It felt kind of awkward how he was staring at me as I ate my sandwich, but for some reason I couldn’t remove my gaze from him. His gaze scanned my body for a couple of seconds before locking with mine again and yet, I couldn’t stop staring at him. There was something about the way he looked at me –about his eyes. I couldn’t quite figure out what it was, but it felt as if he could see right through my soul. It felt as if he just figured out my deepest, darkest secrets. For a split second it felt as if his eyes were telling me a more different story than his appearance was. What was that emotion just now, Hunter?

“Zoe!” Alyssa’s loud voice pulled me out of my train of thoughts.

“Yes?” I tore my gaze away from Hunter, smiling innocently at Alyssa.

She shot me a certain look. “I told you to stay away from him. He’s a psychopath and you never know what he could do! Even eye contact can be dangerous!”

Her words only made me frown. “But how do you know that? Maybe he’s just misunderstood. You can’t just go around calling people a psychopath, you know. How can you just blindly believe these rumors?” I questioned her. “Besides, I was just looking at him anyways.”

“I don’t know. His whole appearance just screams ‘psychopath’. And these rumors could be true too, you never know. Just stay away from him.” she warned.

I didn’t say anything. I just shot her a slight nod and stole a glance back at Hunter. He wasn’t looking at me anymore. There was a water bottle in his hand that for some reason looked very attractive. I couldn’t help but feel like there was more to Hunter than these nasty rumors and scary appearance. The wind blew through his hair and my heart suddenly started pounding. I was definitely developing a crush on Hunter Adams and I didn’t feel bad, because there was nothing to really lose here anyways. His appearance did scream ‘dangerous’, but who knows what’s hiding behind that mask of defensive expressions.

I closed the door and locked it after entering the house. I breathed out in exhaustion as I recalled how deadly the sun was during my walk back home. Luckily his car wasn’t in the garage, so for today I was a free bird. I did a happy dance to myself as I made my way back to my room. I took a shower singing my favorite song, not having a care in the world. I didn’t have to cook for him today either, so that was double the more reason to be happy. I finished my shower, dried myself, wore my shorts, socks, and my tank top before dancing my way back to the kitchen. But as soon as I saw him standing in front of me, my whole world collapsed and I was frozen, rooted to the floor. My smile fell and I thought I felt my heart sink into my stomach too. He simply just stuffed his hands in his pockets before smirking at me.

  “Surprise.”

  Chapter Two

He unbuttoned and zipped up his jeans as he got out of bed. My back was facing him, so I couldn’t really see him. Tears dripped from my eyes as I heard things shift in the background, yet, I couldn’t look at him. I was completely disgusted by him. A brother is supposed to love and protect you –even tease you at times, but not rape you. I never thought that he would turn out this way. Although he wasn’t my brother from the same mother, I still cherished him as my own. He used to do the same. He was the best brother ever, but since our parents passed away, it’s like something clicked within his head and everything just took a dark and twisted turn.

“I’m going to be home tomorrow morning, but you’re going to be at school then, so we’ll finish this when you get home,” I heard him say, but I didn’t answer.

What could I say? I held back a sniff as I heard the bedroom door open and then close again, indicating that he was already leaving for work. Why was this happening? I never wanted this to happen. I never asked for this. He was supposed to protect me, be there for me when I needed him, not take advantage of me. I gathered up the energy to sit down and wiped my tears. There has to be some way out of this... I couldn’t live like this forever. I attempted to stand up, but the bruises suddenly left a stinging pain, making my fall on the bed again. Groaning, I tried again, and this time as I stood, I allowed my brain to process the action happening and then slowly made my way to the bathroom. I turned on the shower and just stood under it, not knowing what to feel, what to think, what to understand. If only Dad wasn’t such a coward, if only he would’ve been with us, stayed with us, grown together with us. The events of last night slowly, like an animal going after its prey, crawled up into my mind and terrorized my thought process. The hot tears streamed down my
face and at this point even I couldn’t hold it back. It was always like this. One thing after another, one day after another he would take advantage of me, he would hurt me in ways no one can even imagine, and yet, me being this coward, couldn’t even do anything against this powerful man. I’m not this damsel in distress that could easily be saved. My brother’s a powerful man. I fell on my knees.

My brother... Tony Rainey, the owner of Julia Enterprises, known to have businesses all over the globe, he’s not only powerful in the legal world, but in the illegal world he’s also one of the most feared people. Illegal businesses such as human trafficking, Money Laundering, and Drug trafficking are just few of the things he’s known for. I tried running away once, but he tracked me within a few hours and what came after that would even make the devil tremble. Thoughts of the way he touched my body in unwanted places, the way he hit me as if I was nothing but a puppet of his, he didn’t care. Perhaps he never did. I screamed. Everything went through my head like a train going full speed. The pain was so unbearable, I just wanted this all to end.

  Maybe I should end myself...

What was left for me in this world? It’s not like anyone lived for me anyways. He won’t care either. All he cares about is torturing me. He gets a thrill in seeing me suffer. I turned off the shower and got out, brushing my teeth afterwards. My eyes looked as dead as I felt on the inside, but at this point, who cared? I walked back to my room, taking out my clothes from the closet. I didn’t really care about how I looked. All I cared about was the fact that my bruises were covered up. I just wore a pair of skinny jeans and a long-sleeved black shirt that did a great job covering everything up. I applied some makeup to make myself look a little more decent and also popped some in my bag, in case it starts fading throughout the day. I grabbed my bag and made my way out of the house. School wasn’t that far, so I just walked my way to school. Releasing a heavy sigh, I took my first few steps.

Was this ever going to end...?

“How are we supposed to finish this on one fucking week? When the fuck are we going to study? We even have that fucking play coming up! We have our damn presentation next week and this bitch is just ruining our lives!” Alyssa complained.

“I honestly agree with you,” I breathed out. “But we have to do this. Besides, she’s just doing her job. We can do this. You always find a way.” I smiled at her.

Alyssa’s lips curved into a sweet smile too as she placed her hand on my shoulder. “Thanks, Zoe. I don’t know what I would do without you. You always just know what to say.”

Her words made me beam out of happiness. That’s right. Alyssa was my one light in this dark world. She was always there for me and it didn’t matter how much Tony tortured me, as long as I still had Alyssa in my life, I could find a way to escape this hell. My stomach suddenly grumbled, making me freeze. Alyssa shot me this shocked look just before the both of us started laughing out loud.

“You haven’t eaten again, huh?” She raised her eyebrow at me. When she noticed me avoiding eye-contact, she ruffled my hair. “No worries. Look,” she said as she went through her bag before taking out two sandwiches. “I have two, you eat one.”

I thanked her and slowly took the sandwich from her hand. I started eating the sandwich and so did Alyssa. I could help but admire her for the kind and loving person she was. I felt so blessed to have her. The sun made her features look even better that they already were. Her sharp jawline, slender figure, beautiful long eyelashes all stood out. What looked even better was her dark skin. She has this chocolate brown color that was so smooth and beautiful. She felt like my only ray of sunshine in Tony’s monstrous world.

The sun burned me once again as I walked home, but I started noticing some dark clouds taking over the sky. The long sleeves were starting to bother me, because I was for one already making me take a bath in my own sweat and also making the bruises hurt more than they already did. I sighed thinking about home. Was it even home now? It wasn’t the house my mother cherished anymore. It was an endless pit of misery that only worsened like an active volcano. Should I kill myself? I could, but could I pull it off? No... I couldn’t. I wasn’t scared of death, but not I will not let Tony have the luxury of seeing me even weaker than he already has.

“Hello there, hottie!” I heard a sudden voice behind me.

My eyes widened, but I didn’t look back. Instead, I tried walking faster, but soon enough, what I feared happened. His hands clasped around my bruised wrist, making me groan out in pain.

“Oh, that was such a beautiful sound.” he laughed disgustingly.

Before I could even react to what he said, he pulled me in this dark alleyway and pushed me against the wall.

“Please, let me go!” I cried.

This man looked as if he hadn’t taken a bath in days. So ungroomed and disgusting was all that could go through my head. The way he forced himself on my made me think of Tony, which only worsened everything. Tears blurred my vision and instinctively my knee lifted to kick him between his legs, but before I could, he pushed his body against mine roughly, stiffening my legs. I felt hopeless. His lips pressed against my neck and the moment I felt his tongue on my skin, I felt lie throwing up.

  “Let me go!” I screamed.

He let out his disgusting laugh again. “No can do, princess! I am making you mine!” his words only made me scream even louder, but the louder I screamed and the more I squirmed, the more excited he got. “Don’t be scared. I’ll take good care of you. Better than any other man ever will.”

That only made me squirm even harder, but a sudden voice interrupted.

  “Think again, motherfucker.”

The man stopped and angrily looked at the person. “Who the fuck are you?”

“The guy who’s gonna bust your face into pieces, you piece of shit.”

The light behind him was too bright to see his face, but the figure seemed so familiar. The moment the man let go of me, I collapsed to the ground. My breathing was all over the place as well as my nerves.

“Who do you think you are talkin’ to me like that? This girl is mine. I mean, I could share, but after I'm done.” the man laughed again nastily.

My anxiety took a toll and everything in front of me started to get blurry.

“You see, that’s where your wrong. She’s mine and Hunter Adams doesn’t like to share!” he said right before he threw a punch at the man.

  Hunter?!

The man fell on the ground, but Hunter still didn’t stop. He grabbed him by the collar and continued punching him.

“Hunter...” I breathed out. “Please stop...” I reached towards him, but before I knew, I collapsed.

“Zoe!” I heard him call out my name before I saw his blurry figure run towards me.

Hunter helped me up. “Can you walk?” he asked as he helped me out of the dark alleyway.

When he noticed that I’m not talking, he somehow managed to get me on his back as he carried me somewhere. I closed my eyes, feeling Hunter’s warmth against me. I was still shivering, since I was still in shock, but somehow being with Hunter made me feel at ease. It took a while before I was placed on something to sit. I opened my eyes and realized I was sitting on a bench and Hunter was nowhere to be seen. Did he leave?

“Here.” I heard his voice and my head snapped to his direction.

He was handing me a bottle of water and I reluctantly took it. “Thank you...” I murmured as I drank some of the water.

He squatted in front of me and took of a cigarette. “Are you hurt somewhere? Are you alright now? You almost lost consciousness back there.”

I nodded. “I’m s...sorry for putting you t...through that,” I said in a small voice. “And thank you...”

“Are you going to be fine? Is there anything else I can do for you?” he stood up and lit his cigarette.

“No, you’ve a...already done enough, Hunter...” I started to mentally curse my stuttering.

The way he cared for me made my heart skip a beat
. The only one who cared about me up until now was Alyssa and even if Hunter is doing this just because he wants to be helpful, I am still grateful that he at least cared and helped me out of that situation. I don’t know what would’ve happened to me if he hadn’t done anything to help me.

“Anyways, I would drop you home, but I have to meet someone very important. So, if you don’t mind-”
