My view of Roman and what I knew about him was changing on an hourly basis. At first I'd thought he was aloof and maybe even a little cool, but looking back I think we were both just awkward, and Micah was helping us bridge that awkward gap. The older shifter was more affectionate and emotional than I'd first thought if what the mate bond was telling me was correct and I wasn't misinterpreting it somehow.

I wasn't sure how long we stood like that but when I felt a vibration come from the pocket of Micah's pants, it startled me. "Is that your phone in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?" I asked, chuckling at my own joke.

"Wow, that's … so corny." Micah looked at me, trying to be serious, but a smile spread over his face even though he seemed to fight it. With a sigh he broke away from our group hug and checked his phone. His face went fully serious then and I felt a knot twisting in my stomach at the thought of what he might be reading on his phone.

"We need to go," Micah said, still looking down at his phone. "Rob has taken his concerns to the elder council and the alpha already, and they aren't sure what to make of us, but he told plenty of people along the way and there may as well be a mob with pitchforks and torches heading our way. My friend Neal has texted me to warn me.” He lifted the phone and wiggled it in the air. Without looking back down he added, “If they find us they'll take us into custody to protect us from the mob and probably so the elder council can interrogate us, especially you, Nina. The mob is accusing you of being some kind of witch and not a wolf at all."

  I wanted to vomit.

"Pack anything that's important to you," Roman said, looking Micah dead in the eye, his face carefully blank. "I'm going to make a couple calls. Be ready to leave in five."

"What should I do?" I asked, feeling useless, which I hated.

"Get dressed, finish your breakfast, and box up the rest so we can eat. We're going to be on the move for a while."

I nodded, even though I hated eating at a time like that. My stomach was already sick with nerves, but I knew I needed my strength and needed to fuel my body. As I rifled through Micah's kitchen cabinets looking for food containers between bites; I overheard Roman on the phone talking low and fast as he set up whatever it was he set up.

Micah was back downstairs in a flash with a duffle bag over his shoulder that looked filled to bursting along with a backpack he had slung over the other shoulder. "Ready."

"I've got the food." I picked up a couple reusable grocery bags that I'd filled not only with the food they'd cooked this morning, but some snacks and water I'd found in Micah's pantry.

"We'll stop by my place and grab a couple things and then we'll be on the road. I'm not letting anyone lay a finger on my mate, and no one who thinks you're a damn witch is going to get within ten feet of you if I have anything to say about it. Do you hear me, Nina?" Roman was looking at me with an emotion in his eyes I didn't understand.

"I hear you," I whispered quietly.

"We'll protect you, protect each other, even if it means fighting our own pack to do so, even if we have to go on the run until we find somewhere that can accept us. I don't care what it takes. We are not splitting up again until we are safe. Got it?" He looked at me then at Micah.

"We stick together, no matter what," Micah agreed.

And just like that we were running, not just from their pack, but from my old one as well. The question was: could three shifters survive on their own while being hunted by two different packs?
