“Good to know,” I respond.
“Girls! Stop gallivanting around, would ya?” Nan interjects, popping her hip and giving us a look of dismay. “That man downstairs is driving everyone mad. If you’re ready to do this, we can start early,” she huffs.
“I’m ready!”
“She’s ready,” Mom and I both blurt out at the same exact time.
As I stand in the back out of sight, I watch as my sister Layne pulls Violet down the aisle in a little red wagon. It’s decorated with lace and has the same color bows as my dress on each side. She’s in her carrier, and Layne is tossing flowers out as she pulls her down the aisle. Since we don’t have a ring bearer, we’ve placed the pillow on Violet’s lap. She’ll be both because Landon proclaimed he was too damn old to play the part.
“You ready to do this? If not, if you’ve changed your mind, I can have one of the guys get a getaway car for us and we won’t turn back. As soon as I grab your mom and Violet anyway,” Dad says, and I can see how serious he is about this.
“Dad, I’m sure. He’s the love of my life and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my days growing old with him.”
“I suppose we should get going then. This song is our cue, but make sure you’re positive before we take that first step,” he continues.
“Dad!”
“Alright!” he pouts. “But Layne is going to be thirty before she does this to me.”
“Watch what you say, Dad. Don’t want to make any bets and watch you eat those words.”
“Not funny, young lady.”
“I think I’m rather brilliant, personally,” I say as we begin walking down the aisle to the wedding march. Today is absolutely perfect!
Maxum
Watching Lily walk toward me, I feel a lump gather in my throat and my heart starts pounding. “You can always back out, brother,” Jaxson leans in and whispers. “Me and Talon will hold off Luca and Axe while you make your getaway.”
“Shut it, fucker,” I growl, low enough that only he can hear me. “She’s my forever and I’m not ever giving that up.”
“Good answer. Got your back, though, brother. Just wanted you to know.”
As Axe reaches us, he waits for instructions from Luca, who got ordained so he could perform our wedding since he wanted to be a part of our day. Axe kisses Lily’s cheek, gives me a warning glare, then moves to sit with Cara, who now has our baby in the cradle of her arms. I lose myself in the words he’s saying, mentally vowing each and every promise he speaks to the woman at my side. “Maxum, you had something you wanted to say,” Luca prompts. I nod and turn slightly so we’re now facing one another.
“Lily, we met so many years ago that there’s not a happy time in my life that doesn’t have you in the memory. When it became obvious that we shared a mutual attraction, I fought it with everything I had because I truly didn’t feel I deserved someone like you, or the family that came along with you. Only, you showed me differently. Through our darkest days and our brightest nights, you’ve been the one constant, the reason I get up every day. Adding Violet to our lives has only enriched it further. I look forward to all of our tomorrows, the good and the bad, the happy and the sad, as long as you’re by my side. I love you, my Lily. Now and forever.”
I can hear the sniffles coming from the old ladies, but my focus is on her. I see one tear slip out and slide down her cheek and reach out to catch it on my finger. “I’ll always catch your tears, sweetheart,” I murmur.
“Lily, it’s your turn,” Luca instructs.
She looks up at me, her smile a bit wobbly as she tries to control her emotions. “Maxum, I’ve known since the first time I saw you that you were the one for me. I know it took us a few years to get to that point, but my faith in us never wavered, even when you pushed me away in the mistaken belief that you didn’t deserve me… deserve us. Violet is a blessing in so many ways and while in some ways, we did things backwards, I wouldn’t change a minute of any of it, as long as the end result was us, standing here in front of family and loved ones, proclaiming our love for one another, and saying our vows. I loved you yesterday, I love you today, and I’ll love you tomorrow until I draw my last breath.”
Luca has us exchange our rings and I hear her gasp as I slide the wedding band on her finger. I had it specially designed to include an infinity symbol with diamonds and on each side, our birthstones. “With the exchange of the rings, it’s my privilege to announce that in accordance with the great State of Texas, I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss your bride.”
I draw her into my arms and cup her face. Looking into her eyes, I whisper so only she can hear, “I love you, Lily,” before I kiss her, uncaring of the eyes watching.
As I finally go to pull away, I hear Tig yell, “Get a room!”
