Sergeant Lewis didn’t talk for long. Tony relayed the information. “Jade, Sergeant Lewis thinks Anita got out of the country. Her name was on a passenger list on a flight to the US three days ago.”
Jade froze.
“The US officials have been informed, so there’s a chance she’ll be picked up.”
Jade and Maya exchanged a look.
“But there’s some good news. The CPS is taking up the case against Ron Somers.”
“Good,” Maya said. She was sipping her espresso from a pure white espresso cup that Tony didn’t remember Jade having. She suspected Maya had bought Jade a set.
Tony turned to her. “Jade and I have a proposition for you.”
Maya smiled. “I don’t care how many times you ask me, I’m not going to do my trapeze act in my skimpy, body-hugging costume.”
Tony gulped. “I haven’t ever asked you that, but I will now.”
Jade’s face relaxed. She broke into a smile. “That I got to see. But that wasn’t the proposition. We’d like you to join the agency.”
Maya raised her eyebrows. “Really?” She thought. “What would my role be?”
“Detecting,” Tony said. “You’re obviously good at it. And you can do all that other stuff, breaking into places, getting out of handcuffs…” The words resonated. Tony glanced at Jade.
She flinched. Then she caught Tony’s eye. “Don’t tiptoe round me, Tony. It’s going to take some time, but I will heal from this. You can help by not acting guilty. It doesn’t suit you, my friend.”
“Learn from the situation and move on,” Maya said. “We’re all governed by our pasts. The trick is to be open to looking at that. I can trust my instincts again. A few months ago, I didn’t know that, which is why I was so obsessed with making sure Jade was all right.”
“Thank God you were,” Jade murmured. She looked up from her new laptop to give Maya a sweet smile.
“I have to admit, this communication stuff of yours might actually be the tiniest bit useful,” Tony said. She wanted to lean over and kiss Maya.
Jade cleared her throat. “I’ve been doing the accounts. They’re in a dire state. The last cases have been expensive ones. We can’t afford to run at a loss.”
Tony sighed. “Yeah, we need to think about that.”
“There is some good news.” Jade clicked up a spreadsheet. “I’ve been researching the value of the stuff you kept from Smith’s loft. The Revox is worth around two hundred pounds, and those tapes are about twenty-five pounds each. There were twenty of those. He had two hundred pound notes, and the going rate for an old pound note today is three pounds fifty. With the other stuff you brought out, all in all, we made approximately a thousand pounds from your attic clearance.”
“Hey, that’s not bad. The van only cost me forty,” Tony said.
“Yeah, well, we had a lot of other expenses—hotel rooms, plane flights. We’ll be lucky if we break even.”
The barge owner’s girlfriend stepped off the towpath onto her boat. She scowled at Tony, smiled at Maya, and beamed at Jade. Jade gave her a wave.
“So what do you say, Maya? You didn’t give us an answer. Do you want to join our fun but costly detective agency?” Tony said.
Maya pursed her lips. Then she grinned wryly. “Why not? How dangerous can it be, right?”
Tony raised her coffee mug. “To the Supernatural Detective Agency,” she said.
They leaned in for a clink of cup against mug.
The barge owner’s girlfriend screwed her eyes up suspiciously at them and then swung the door closed with a slam.
“The Supernatural Detective Agency,” they said in chorus.
