Felicity - Stands By Page 20

by Richmal Crompton

Then Felicity came downstairs, followed by Marcia. Only somehow it didn’t look like Felicity. The red-gold plait was gone. Her hair was closely shingled. A feather head-dress was attached to it by a silver band. White gossamer draperies . . . pearls . . . a long train.

Franklin and Rosemary, standing side by side in the hall, both felt a sudden catch at their hearts as they thought of Felicity with her swinging red-gold plait, her schoolgirl hat and coat. That Felicity had gone for ever . . .

“Hurry up, my child,” said Matthew anxiously.

“Doesn’t she look sweet?” called Marcia.

“Adorable,” said Rosemary sadly, “but somehow—–”

“But somehow it isn’t Felicity,” supplied Franklin.

Felicity had let Matthew wrap her cloak around her. She was just going out of the door to the waiting motor.

She turned to them at the words and flung them a grimace.

It wasn’t quite the Face, but it had a lot of the Face in it.

“It’s all right,” said Franklin, relieved, “it is Felicity.”

‘‘Yes, I don’t think we need worry,” said Rosemary, “it will always be Felicity.”
