Penelope smiled. “Well, in fairness, I was after your boyfriend.”
Kim shook her head. “True, but he was yours to take. I knew, you know. Sure, I hated you for it, but I knew it was you all along, and I’m not the least bit surprised you’re getting married.”
Penelope was over the past and just wanted to leave it where it belonged and focus on the future. “It doesn’t matter anymore. Let’s just put the past behind us.”
“Deal.”
Penelope smiled warmly, finding she quite liked the adult version of Kim Rossi. “Would you and Hal like to come over for dinner next week?”
“That would be fun. I’ll need a sitter for the kids, but we’d love to.” Kim put a hand on Penelope’s arm. “And see, everything worked out just the way it was supposed to.”
Penelope looked over at Evan, his face animated as he talked about the game he loved. The game that had both pulled them apart and pushed them back together again. “Yeah, I think it did.”
He caught her watching him and immediately turned back to her, sliding his arm around her waist. “Everything okay?”
“Everything is perfect.” And it was. She had her dream boy. But even better, she had her dream man. Her first and last love. After all this time, they’d come full circle and were as good as new.
