Ty had been in contact with RJ’s attorney and offered to be a character witness, should it be required. At heart, RJ was a good man. Ty recognized that. He also knew that circumstance could dictate someone’s actions . . . actions they might come to regret.

That was why justice was often depicted as a woman holding a scale. With the bad, there was good. With the dark, there was light.

“Hey,” Cressida said. “You want to see something?”

  “Sure.”

She put the books to one side and patted the bed. Ty managed to park himself next to her. She clicked on a file on her laptop and an image appeared, a color picture of a young African-American woman. She was in her early twenties, with long, straightened feather-cut hair and cat’s-eye-framed tortoiseshell glasses. She was smiling, full of hope.

  “This was Carole.”

  “Your great-aunt?”

“It was taken a few months before . . .”

It was only in that moment that Ty realized he had never before seen a picture of Carole Chabon. He studied it, taking his time. He thought of Adelson Shaw, and a feeling built inside him that he had to tamp down.

Some things were best left to the law, and he knew the FBI had spoken with RJ about what he believed Adelson Shaw had done when he’d met the young Carole Chabon, and set the whole thing spinning wildly out of control.

Ty looked from the picture to Cressida. He could see the resemblance in her features. “You done good,” he said to her.

  She gave a somber nod.

“No, I mean it,” he said. “She deserved justice, and you’ve helped deliver it.”

She reached out and took his hand, folding her fingers around his. He left it there for a moment. Then he got up. “I’ll be around for a few more days before I fly back to LA. If you need anything just holler.”

  “Thanks, Tyrone.”

“Sure thing,” he said, walking to the door.

When he looked back to her, she was hunched over her laptop, getting ready to write her and Carole’s story. He stepped out into the corridor and headed for the elevator.
