  South Beach Diet

  The key elements of the South Beach Diet are good fats like olive and canola oil, the omega-3 fish oils, and oils found in most nuts combined with good carbohydrates, which are vegetables, whole-grain breads and whole fruits. Strategic snacking is encouraged to keep hunger under control and prevent cravings. Attention is paid to the glycemic index, which is a measure of how quickly a carbohydrate raises your blood sugar.

  The Mediterranean Diet

  The classic Mediterranean diet recommended by the American Heart Association consists of high consumption of fruits, vegetables, bread and other cereals, potatoes, beans, nuts and seeds. Olive oil is an important mono-unsaturated fat source. Dairy products, fish and poultry are consumed in low to moderate amounts, and little red meat is eaten. Eggs are consumed no more than four times a week. Wine is consumed in low to moderate amounts. People who follow the average Mediterranean diet eat less saturated fat than those who eat the average American diet.

  Zone Diet meals follow the hand-eye method. One-third of your plate consists of a serving of lean protein no bigger than the size and thickness of the palm of your hand. The other two-thirds is filled with favorable carbohydrates, such as fruits and vegetables. Finally, a dash of “good” fat, such as nuts, olive oil or avocado, is added. You eat three meals a day, plus two snacks, and never go more than five hours without eating, so you don’t feel deprived.

  A program for weight loss for the short term and weight maintenance for the long term. Weekly, all patients have their blood pressure checked and are given the opportunity to speak with a clinical assistant, nurse or dietitian. Each patient also participates in a weekly group class and sees the physician no less than monthly. Treatments for weight loss are effective but purposefully do not result in rapid weight loss. Whether weight loss is accomplished with the help of liquid formula, regular food, surgery or medication, staff monitor patients to ensure that they lose as much fat as possible, but not at the expense of lean tissue such as skeletal muscle, the heart, the liver and the skin. Also holds workshops on topics such as low-fat cooking, exercise and stress reduction to promote better health and nutrition.
