  What a difference a few days could make. Until now, he reflected, change had usually seemed to be for the worse. A single moment dividing the innocent happiness of his youth on that other Hunter's Down, from years of loss, grief, pain and guilt. Just a few short days ago he had driven in the opposite direction, the seat beside him empty, the back piled high with wool, his heart lonely and his expectations low.

  He looked past the boy with the floppy hair and the big smile, to the woman who was at last going to be his wife. She smiled back at him and stretched her hand out across the back of the seat to touch his hair as if reassuring herself that he was really there.
