  “Not ones who are assholes.”

He smiled. After a while, he took a breath, and he breathed out heavily. “Thanks.”

  “I am glad you survived.”

We held each other’s eyes for a moment, until Brad looked away.

“I can go and let you rest.”

I tried to stand, and he reached for me, grabbing my hand. “I’d like it if you’d stay. That is, unless you have somewhere else you need to be.”

I watched Brad for a moment. He had no idea about the magical side of me, no idea about the magical world at all. And right now, maybe that was a good thing.

Squeezing his hand, I took a seat. “I can stay.”

Grab the next book in the Hedge Mage and Medicine series: Heat Stroke.

The last year has been a time of change. I finished residency. Started as an attending physician. Discovered I had magic. Stopped a magical attack.

Ever since stopping a plan to destroy a vampire elder, I’ve known that I was in danger. Barden has arranged as much protection as he can, but I still want to live my life and practice medicine.

A power outage at the hospital makes work more complicated, but it’s the return of John Adams to Minneapolis that really worries me. I’m caught in the middle and might be the only one able to stop what’s planned, but in doing so, I can’t help but think I’m doing exactly what they want. How can I focus on both medicine and magic at the same time?
