The Baby Shift- Nebraska Page 4

by Becca Fanning

“What’s up?” she asked as she walked into the office. Jack was sitting in front of his computer, looking from the screen to her and back.

“We won!” he shouted, his eyes manic.

“Won what?” she asked, patting her belly. She could feel the baby kicking—he/she/it did that more and more these days. Sadie couldn’t wait ‘til she delivered this thing and stopped getting kicked in the rib every time her little peanut had a little bit of extra energy.

“We won the RITA’s!” Jack said, gesturing toward his computer screen. Sadie walked forward, and sure enough, there was an email from the RITA judges congratulating him on Love on the Oregon Trail, the story of Cressida and Jeremiah’s love.

“Oh my god!” she screeched, jumping up and down as she held onto the back of his chair. “That’s amazing!!”

“I know!” he said, standing up and lifting her into his arms. Sadie still marveled that he was able to do that given that she was carrying a nearly full-term baby in her belly, but then again, he did have the strength of a bear, so it wasn’t all that surprising.

“I never would have been able to do it without you, you know. Will you come with me to accept the award?” he asked, setting her down on the carpet.

Sadie nodded. “Hell yeah! Me and little Peanut here,” she said, gesturing toward her belly, “will definitely be there. Front row. The mama and her mate’s baby.”

Jack smiled so wide Sadie was surprised his face didn’t hurt. “God, I love you,” he said, leaning down and kissing her softly. He broke away and spoke to her belly. “And I love you, too.”

Sadie could feel a small kick and laughed. “I think it’s saying, “I love you, too”” she said, patting her belly and laughing. She looked up and into Jack’s eyes and felt every single bit of his love infusing into her and their little one, and she’d never been more happy for that night in the cabin, with the make-out and the abrupt ghost interruption and everything that came after. If she hadn’t had all of that, she wouldn’t have the token of their love rolling around in her belly. And she was so, so grateful for all of it.
