Julianna rolled her eyes and smiled. “Yes, well, to be truly honest that seems to be a permanent state for my mother as of late.”

Lady Amelia’s eyes widened briefly as though gleefully surprised. “Mine does, as well, you should have seen her these last two weeks.” She paused on the stairs and grimaced. “No, I take that back. I am extremely glad that you did not see her like that.”

Julianna laughed and followed Lady Amelia down the stairs.

“This is the library,” Lady Amelia told her, stopping at an open door. “Please feel free to visit anytime you would like. My father takes care of Eastbridge business in a smaller room at the end of the hall. We have many books including many of the new adventure novels.”

“Oh?” Julianna asked looking in the room.

“Is that bad?” Lady Amelia asked, looking a little stricken.

Julianna shook her head. “Goodness, no! I am quite looking forward to choosing a title to read this evening.”

“The newest books are there.” Lady Amelia walked into the room and pointed to a shelf in the corner near two large windows.

Julianna nodded and walked over to one of the windows.

Lady Amelia continued walking around the room. “The drawing room is across the hall. You can take your book in there to read if you would like.”

Julianna was only half listening as she was looking out the large windows behind the desk. Far back from the main house was a building with a large fenced in area, several horses moved beyond the fence.

As though reading Julianna's mind Lady Amelia began to explain, "From this window, you can see part of the garden and of course, the stables. I might see if anyone wants to tour the stables I know that we have several foals that were born in the spring. They are quite sweet."

"Really?" Julianna asked hardly able to conceal the excitement in her voice.

“Yes, do you like horses?" Lady Amelia asked turning to face her.

Julianna smiled. “I do. I like them very much.”

“Oh good! As do I,” Lady Amelia said with a big smile and then sighed. "Please pardon my delight, it is not often that I find another young lady with an affinity for horses."

"No, I understand completely. Ladies our age are more interested in new dresses and attending parties.”

Lady Amelia looked out at the window at the horses. "Perhaps you would like to see the stables while you are here.”

“Thank you,” Julianna nodded. “I look forward to it.”

  About Kelly Anne Bruce

Kelly Anne Bruce has loved the Regency era of English culture since her teenage years. The country estates, London city happenings, and lovely wardrobes are part of the allure.

But the people of that time are what draws Kelly in. The hierarchy in society is fascinating. A sense of pride in who they are and where they come from matters even if the person isn’t from nobility. Their concern over propriety while behaving less than properly gives plenty of opportunities to tell a tale.

Kelly Anne is an American, married to an Englishman. They live in Cambridge, which happens to be her favourite city in England. Their two cats and a dog run the household remarkably well!
