“I’ll be ready. You won’t regret it, Shay. I promise.”
I slipped straight out of the house, leaving a note in the hall about meeting a friend, and walked down to the beach where I watched a guy at the end cabin getting the outside ready. I didn’t want to raise suspicion, so I called in for an ice cream and then went home.
Later that night, I snuck out of the house and made my way to the guy’s cabin. I knocked on the patio door and met the man who would tell me his name was Miller. I introduced myself as Shay’s sister and told him how worried I was for her and how I thought Miller could help her escape Cam’s clutches. He was so distracted with the story he didn’t see me slip the pills into his drink.
High as a kite, Miller thought he was a rainbow-colored merman and he moved out further into the lake. We were still out of sight of the other villas. I swam to meet him and placing my arms around him pulled him under. His intoxicated self was no match for me.
I picked up the bag I’d left at the side of his cabin and quickly towel dried my hair and changed in the shadows.
And then I went home.

A year had passed since my affair. The online side of the business was so successful we’d had to hire more staff. The coffee house was booming and we were in talks about letting people franchise more Brew Love coffee houses. Cam had told me we were financially secure for life and that we could also help Becca.
Becca had gone onto college. She wanted to be a forensic psychologist. She spent far too much time watching True Crime, but like Cam said, it could be worse, she could have been out getting high.
I was glad that we were already financially secure, because life was laughing at Cam’s five-year- plan. I held up the stick I’d peed on, the third, and sure enough, there was another positive result.
I was going to be a mom. We were going to be parents.
Since the affair, it was like a shift had taken place within me. After spending months worrying I was going to be found out, Miller’s death faded away as other scandals rocked the island. That was the thing about a place where people hid their true selves, where people were liars. There was always a secret ready to be exposed and people ready to expose it. I’d realized just how lucky I was with the life I had, and how stupidly I could have thrown it all away, just for sex. Just because I’d selfishly wanted more.
I looked at the stick in my hand. Everything I needed was here. I placed a hand on my belly, imagining the swell that would come to it with time. The sounds of a baby’s cry in the air. I would be the best mom I could be. My child would want for nothing.
Life was good in my happy home on Betrayal Bend.
