For being critical fans and sympathetic readers, I have to thank Jessi Rich and Elizabeth Mann – also for encouraging me to write the book when I was teetering on the brink of beginning. For this, thanks are also due to Zosia Wand and her writing group at the Reading Room. Thanks also to Zosia for cake and coffee, and for making toast when I arrive having not had time for breakfast.
Continuing the theme of food and hospitality, thank you to Supal Desai and Lara Trela for putting me up on numerous trips to London, and to Stephen Hyde and Nicky Godfrey-Evans for lending me their phone line and space at their kitchen table.
My final thanks have to go to Mum and Dad. I couldn’t ask for more supportive parents, or for more patient neighbours. Thank you for almost thirty years of advice and hugs and stories. Thank you for the thousands of miles of lifts, and for being an equally encouraging audience at book festivals and school concerts. For always believing in me, and for teaching me to believe in myself: thank you.
