Uh oh. “What is it?”
“I just want you to know that I loved getting to know you this weekend and getting to see you for the first time. You broke down my walls, Brooke. I’m not asking for any commitment beyond this vacation, but if you want, if you would have me, I’d like to date you. I want to know you better.”
She felt herself blush. This was what she’d always wanted to hear from him. “I would like that very much,” she replied.
“But that’s not all,” he continued, putting his hands on her waist, holding her firmly, and she found herself staring into those amazing brown eyes, and she saw something there that made her heart skip a beat. Though she wasn’t sure, though she hated to even guess, he set her straight. “You’ve stolen my heart, and at the risk of scaring you off, I have to tell you how I feel. I… love you.”
Her heart skipped more than one beat, this time. He stared at her expectantly, not as though he expected her to say it back, but rather, almost expecting her to run.
Brooke set his mind to rest with a kiss. After they both caught their breath, she said, “I love you too. My first order is that you are to remind me of that every morning and night.”
Though she couldn’t see the future, maybe her sister was right, maybe she did have a sixth sense. She had run from relationships in the past because she’d known she hadn’t found the right man. There’d always been a part of her ready to flee, especially once those three words were uttered. This time, she didn’t have that fear. This was the one. She’d known it in her heart the day they’d first met, she’d only had to set events in motion.
“I love you, too,” she repeated.
