*Though I was still too young then to be fully actualized about my race, I knew girls, even orphaned ones, were most important when pretty.

  * What I love about this is that it covers so, so many bigoted bases! Slur-based multitasking! So efficient! This is the #GirlBoss of Hateful Remarks and, in that regard, we must clap!

  * The roots of internalized racism and sexism run deep, and they are sprinkled with the Miracle-Gro that is prioritizing “beauty” and pretending it equates to happiness.

*Here, “boyfriend” means “a guy who asked me out on AIM and would sometimes look at me in the hallway.”

*Here, “boyfriend” means “a guy who asked me out on AIM and went to one (1) high school football game with me.”

*I just went back and forth between “will” and “would.” Even hypothetical me is nervous about having kids.

*Actor portrayal, of course. Wouldn’t want to see an actual depressed person. Yuck.

*Crying Because People Are Nice to Me is what this book should have actually been called.

*Additionally, every city in the US falls somewhere on the “body of water/body of a fish” photo spectrum. Example: Kansas City has a high density of man-with-fish photos. Every man in Chicago is legally obligated to have a picture near Lake Michigan.

*The idea of being “surprised” by a proposal or “having no idea” an engagement is coming feeds into my exact brand of anxiety.

*Did you know every church has a Father Mike? If yours didn’t, perhaps you were the Father Mike.
