“Don’t know if I even believe in love. I’d like to think it's real, but from what I’ve seen over the years, I doubt it.”
“Well, tell me, J.J., have you gotten so cynical that you aren’t open to the possibility there can be variations of love?” Luke probed.
“I don't know what you mean.” Shit. This is weird.
“I mean that love can be cultivated if it’s a shared emotion. It all begins with feelings, of course, and escalates from there. Do you believe that?”
“Sure, I guess. The feelings come first.”
“Right. That physical attraction has to be there. For instance, I saw the way you looked at Kayla. You find her attractive, don’t you?”
“Sure. She’s beautiful, but I wasn’t flirting or anything.”
“It would be all right if you were, J.J.”
“It would?”
“Have you ever heard of polyandry?”
“No. What is it?”
J.J. listened to Luke’s explanation, his eyes widening as they automatically went to Kayla who was watching them intently through slightly shuttered eyes. He felt a quickening in his groin at the thought of being with her while his mind struggled to grasp what Luke was saying about a woman having more than one mate, or husband, though it would not be legally binding.
“So, let me get this straight. You guys, all of you, are married to her?”
“Yes, we are all committed to Kayla and she to us. Like I said, we’re family; a unique family but family nonetheless, devoted to each other and to her.”
“Wow. This is a new one on me.”
“Would you like to be one of us?”
J.J. was astounded. “What? You mean, be—ah—married to Kayla?”
“In the sense of complete commitment, yes. Of course it would only be binding within the confines of our private world. You understand?”
“Yeah. But that would be up to her, wouldn’t it?”
Kayla has already consented to accepting you as one of us.”
“She has? I haven’t even spoken to her.”
“She communicated to me that she found you desirable and I saw the looks you were giving her, so I think the feeling is mutual, isn’t it?”
“Yeah, sure. I mean, what guy in his right mind wouldn’t want to be with a beautiful woman like her?”
“Then consider the offer. Go talk to her.”
J.J. walked over and sat down next to Kayla and smiled shyly. He suddenly felt tongue-tied and as awkward as he had on his very first date. Swallowing hard, he reached for her hand and lifted it to his mouth, kissing it in the romantic way he had seen in movies.
When he saw her mouth quirk up in a near smile, he almost bristled, believing she was silently making fun of him until she said, “Thank you for that, J.J. That was very sweet. Did Luke explain things to you?”
“Sort of. I never heard of polyandry before.”
“There are rules we live by that are exclusively our own, J.J. If you are open to the possibility, we can discuss them. If not, no hard feelings. I like you and I believe we will be compatible, sexually speaking.”
J.J. felt himself grow hard just thinking about it. Kayla dropped her hand to his crotch and laughed as her fingers sought out his rock-hardened shaft pushing painfully against his jeans.
“I thought you'd be a stud and I see I was right. So, are you game?”
J.J. nodded, not believing his good luck. He had to fight the urge to jump up and yell a childish yippee, as he said, “I’m definitely game. So what are the rules and how does it work, this polyandry marriage thing?”
Kayla called the other men to gather round. She introduced them to J.J. and he to them, then began her explanation of their lifestyle, ending with the rules they had adopted and what they knew worked within the household.
She ended with, “There’ll be a ceremony with all attending and vowing commitment to each other and then…”
“Ah, wait a minute,” J.J. interrupted. “That doesn’t mean I would be expected to—ah—sleep with the guys, does it?”
They all laughed and J.J. had to fight back an angry retort as Kayla said, “No. Each of my husbands has an assigned night with me. We have a planned schedule of rotation. No one is ever expected to do anything he doesn’t want to do, J.J. We all get along and consider ourselves family. We share in the household duties, each doing what he is most suited for and all have to agree on a new husband. So,” she glanced around at the men, “Do you guys accept J.J. as a possible fourth?”
One by one they said yes.
Then the guys shook his hand and slapped his back and Kayla pulled him close and kissed him passionately.
J.J. suddenly felt as though he had stepped through a looking glass into a new world—one he felt certain would define his very existence; one he felt he had been born to find.
