The Whiz Mob and the Grenadine Kid Page 30

by Colin Meloy

The dérive is not a pickpocket’s scheme; I borrowed it from the Letterists, a midcentury Parisian artist collective led by Guy Debord. The mob must’ve picked it up from him. There are still dérives being followed today—perhaps you should start your own group of psychogeographers and drift your city or town. . . .

As always, I’m forever indebted to Carson Ellis, my wife and collaborator, for supporting me while I wrote this thing, for wrangling our children when I couldn’t, for being a great reader and listener, and, last but not least, providing the beautiful, evocative illustrations you see accompanying the story.

  Merci! Au revoir!
