Dead Man Walking Page 31

“You’ll never make a gentlemen out of me.” Blaze smirked.

“Ha! We’ll see. I’ll get Jane to sort you out in due time. Mark my words.” He waved out to Jane and Benji. They were sitting in the front pew. They’d made it over for the wedding in the nick of time after Commissioner Marshall had granted Blaze’s request.

Doyle and his superior had made all the necessary arrangements for Jane and Benji’s move to New Zealand after their raid on the brotherhood’s clubhouse. Lucky and all the members that resisted arrest were shot on site. For the moment, the streets of Manhattan belonged to Skinny-Jay. Scarface was beaten to a pulp before being brutally butchered.

Jane broke down in tears after learning that Blaze had taken a bullet and almost bled out on the operating table. They’d soon turned to tears of joy when Doyle informed her that not only had Blaze recovered from his injuries, but was now deemed a free man and had been appointed as Ryan’s new partner in the Milton City Homicide Unit after Hampton had officially announced his retirement. He and Elizabeth were engaged to be married.

Jane was nervous, scared, and happier than any moment of her life that she could recall. It was a new chapter for her and Blaze, a chapter they were both willing to explore together, with Benji at the centre.

Blaze finally had a family to call his own; a reason to wake up in the morning; no longer a dead man walking.

At the conclusion of the reception dinner, the crowd followed the bride and groom down the stairs of The Greasy Axle towards their waiting limousine. Ryan opened the rear door for Sharon to climb inside. Then right before he joined her, he called out to Blaze, “Don’t be late for work on your first day! I want a partner I can rely on when I get back!”

Blaze put his arm around Jane; she nuzzled in close, safe, under the wing of her hero, smiling from ear to ear as she heard Blaze reply, “I wouldn’t fucking dream of it.”
