“Andromeda Clark,” Ben said in a husky voice, “I have loved you for too long without making the commitment to you that I should have. I want to be with you always. I want your face to be the first thing I see in the morning—”

“Oh, you poor thing, I get real bad bedhead.”

“Stop. I’m tryin’ to do this right so we can tell our children all about it someday.”

Children. Oh. I’d think about that another time. But what a ring. The diamond flashed with the glimmer of a star that had been plucked from the sky and inserted in a gold setting.

“I’m sorry. Go ahead. I need to learn to be quiet.” My hands trembled. In truth, I’d dreamed of a day like this. I wanted to be with him always, to learn to live with him as his wife. Maybe we wouldn’t be average newlyweds, but we still had plenty of years to build a wonderful life together.

Ben cleared his throat. “I want your face to be the first thing I see in the morning and the last thing I see at night. I’m tired of being on the road, and I want to live the adventure at home. With you. Say you’ll marry me, Ands.”

  “Oh, I will!”

With that, he slid the diamond solitaire onto my finger, and we sealed the agreement with a kiss. Adventure? Did he mean adventure by planning a wedding, building a house, running a business, and getting used to being around each other all the time? Well, bring it on.

Andi’s adventures continue in books two and three of Scents of Murder:

  The Wiles of Watermelon

  The Perils of Peaches
