  Prologue

Ferdinand Augustus Maxos III. King of the second planet of the Interplanetary Federation of Hyrruld. Five feet ten inches in height, slender yet lithely muscular build with all the sinuous grace of his race. Shoulder length navy blue hair and contrasting golden brown eyes shaped like a cat’s, the iris’s reptilian in nature. Swirling colours of silver, bronze, and black gave the eyes a hypnotic cast, inviting a person to look deep into their mesmerising depths and lose themselves. Highly revered and highly feared. He stared down at the ruins of his former kingdom in despair, golden eyes shimmering with tears of mixed sorrow, anger and bitter defeat. For all his powers, for all his authority, he looked over the ruin of his home.

King Maxos was better known to his friends as Max. The same friends who had fallen in great numbers after the first invading force of the rebellion. Led by none other than his uncle, Syrrus Maxos.

As a new ruler recently inaugurated, Max had much to celebrate…and much to grieve for. His succession had only come about at the death of his beloved father Ferdinand Augustus Maxos II. Just six short months ago, the great ruler of Hyrruld had been traitorously murdered. Not in a great battle but in his own bed chamber, the victim of a cowardly attack by an assassin paid for by his own brother.

Syrrus had fled as the might of Hyrruld’s Royal Enclave had arrested and executed all those involved in the murderous act. The new monarch Max had been sworn in. His first task? To stop the invasion by a combined force of ten thousand screaming blood-thirsty hordes led by none other than Syrrus.

The battle had been hard-fought, the deadly mix of black magicks and lethal weaponry killing thousands of Royal supporters. Now the Kingdom of Hyrruld lay in ruins and Max stood on the battlements of his once proud fortress with vengeance in his heart and the bitterness of defeat a sour taste in his mouth.

“Your Majesty? We have to leave.” The deep voice of his most trusted advisor interrupted his deep musings. His spine stiffened at the title bestowed. After six months he still wasn’t used to the moniker and resented the situation he had been placed in. Immediately he assumed a less defeated posture, straightening his shoulders and blinking to clear his eyes of tears.

“Sol. I’m ready now.” He turned, lifting his chin against the sympathy in that deep violet gaze.

Sol had been his friend since his days at the warrior’s school and a one-time lover, however briefly. A dragon knave by birth, Sol had taken on the role of protector once Max’s father had been killed. Towering at least a foot taller than Max’s smaller frame, Sol bri
stled with muscles. Golden blond hair plaited in a thick braid down his back. The most beautiful violet eyes contrasted sharply with the tanned perfection of his golden skin. He wore a leather jerkin, close-fitting black pants, and a weapons belt which stretched across the vast expanse of his broad, muscular chest. His pecs were so defined they were like a cliff, jutting above the tightly toned abs which rippled below. Legs like tree trunks supported his heavy frame and the large bulge at the juncture of his thighs revealed that he was definitely in proportion…everywhere.

At one time Max had drooled over his friend whilst in training. Who was he kidding? He still drooled, just more discreetly. That thickly muscled torso would glisten like wet bronze, sweat beads covering his skin and just begging for a tongue to swipe at them.

Training uniform consisted of a pair of pants and little else besides the array of weapons which had to be mastered. The only thing Max had wanted to master was the sleek lines of Sol’s beautiful body. He’d had many a wet dream imagining himself riding the massive endowment between Sol’s thick legs. For a while, the attraction had been mutual.

Forbidden kisses stolen in dark recesses. Quick gropes and touches whilst using communal showers. Two years ago, the pair had given in to their attraction, but then Sol had backed away, leaving Max confused and hurt. Max had always suspected others had spoken with Sol, warning him off and Max had tried and tried to get Sol to change his mind.

Sol had been stubbornly rigid. His coldness had ripped at Max’s heart until finally the heir had given up, hiding his feelings beneath a thin veil of indifference. With no further reciprocal signs that the attraction was mutual, Max had resigned himself to being just a friend. Right now, he needed all the friends he could get.

Five other guards emerged on the battlements beside Sol, all trusted men and fellow dragon knaves. The survivors of the recent conflict had fled into the safety of the tunnels beneath the fortress and had been rescued by allies of the fallen realm of Hyrruld. They were being transported to safer worlds via a system of magick-shielded shuttles. Max and his guards were the last ones to leave.

A last look behind at Syrrus’s brutes collecting the spoils of war had Max clenching his fists in fury. He made a vow to himself. Hyrruld would be avenged. The heroes who even now were being stripped of their dignity in death by thieves and thugs would have justice served.

A loud explosion sounded from below. The final protection to the ruined fortress had begun. Syrrus may have won the city, but he would have to rebuild it from scratch. Max had no intentions of leaving behind anything more than rubble. More explosions vibrated and Max smiled as he heard the yells from below as the ground beneath began to sink. The tunnels had been rigged with devices designed to blow up the escape route behind the survivors…the result being that the massive weight of the fortress above began to fall into the hole created.

Max faced his own mode of transport. He watched as one by one the dragon knaves shifted into their bestial forms, six massive dragons with gleaming scales which glimmered in various hues. Sol lowered his foreleg allowing Max to leap aboard, hoisting himself onto his massive back.

A powerful surge of wings created enough lift to elevate them into the air.

Max gripped the plaited blond mane which lay against the sleek neck of Sol’s huge dragon as they lifted higher and higher. His tears fell silently. His last vision was of Hyrruld’s great fortress as it fell to its knees before crumbling into the dust.

  * * * *

Sol felt Max relax against him as he flew swiftly across the darkening lands of Hyrruld’s second planet to the relative safety beyond the Western Ocean. His heart clenched as he remembered the feel of those silent tears from the man he had been in love with since he could remember. He wished he had the courage to act on that love, but apart from one sensuous night, he had remained distant. Max was a king now and Sol merely his guard. He was proud to be considered Max’s friend, but his heart wanted so much more.

Is Max okay? Sol’s second-in-command, Indigo, sent the telepathic message to Sol, his tone concerned.

Indigo and all the other knaves had trained together, forming an unbreakable bond with both Max and Sol. At no time had they considered leaving when Syrrus had invaded. The knaves understood Sol to be their alpha. Had things been different, all six would have followed protocol and fully bonded as a unit with their new king. As it was, they would need to wait to see how events transpired. All the knaves had a deep affection for Max, and the custom of Hyrruld decreed that a king forged a sexual bond with all of his knaves. So far, only Sol had consummated. Indigo and his comrades patiently waited, their needs on hold as they dealt with this horrific threat.

He’s exhausted. The past six months have been harrowing enough. The fall of the city the last straw. Sol replied sombrely.

Sol had been shocked that Syrrus had so boldly acted to murder his brother. The fact that he had then rallied an army of ten thousand insurgents to take control of the realm and fortress at Tagassi was untenable. Tagassi had been the Royal family’s stronghold for millennia. Generations of Maxos’ had been inaugurated there and the realm had been flourishing for centuries.

Like a lot of families, however, there was friction. Syrrus had definitely had issues for a long time. Blaming his brother for the death of his wife, Syrrus had apparently not been appeased when the true culprits had been brought to justice. Over the years he had spilled his venom to anyone who would hear it, poisoning the relationship between the siblings.

Sol was not stupid. He knew that it was not just Syrrus who was responsible for the recent events. Syrrus had neither the strength nor the wealth to put together such a wicked plan. Intelligence gathered over the last few months suggested a far more evil power was behind it. A power which wanted the whole system of Hyrruld. Sol feared that the battle was just beginning.

We’re not far from Wexx Port, and then we can board the shuttle to leave the planet. Raven joined the conversation, his jet-black scales absorbing the light like a shadow as he flew in formation with the others, slightly behind Max.

We’ll be back, this fight is not over. Jayde promised fiercely, his green hue glinting in the waning light. His scales had the iridescence of mother of pearl, a pale minty colour which seemed to glimmer and glint like waves on the ocean.

Do we have any more intel on who is behind all this? The fourth voice came from Shimmer, a silver dragon knave from the third planet of Hyrruld.

In total, there were twelve planets in the solar system, commonly known as the Interplanetary Federation of Hyrruld. The planet they were on, the second largest, was commonly known as Vexxillon.

Home to the more powerful of the dragon clans, Vexxillon contained six of the twelve allies. Raven, Indigo and Jayde were all born on Vexxillon. Shimmer was of the third planet by size, Hoerrix. Ochre had begun life on the eleventh planet, Jediz Minor and was the last of the lesser knaves in the group. Sol, a golden dragon knave, had his roots in the twelfth planet, Verdanth. A forested jewel with considerable beauty, but little in the way of wealth. The smallest in the solar system, it shared an orbit with three moons, which had been developed as mining colonies. Their minerals were what kept Sol’s home self-sufficient.

Considered the poorest of the Hyrruld Federation, Verdanth was far from Vexxillon. As dragons, they had the ability to travel through space for a little distance, but Verdanth was too far. Verdanth was their final destination. Despite being poor and smaller than its brother planets, Verdanth was the fiercest ally to the Royal family of Vexxillon. The Maxos heirs had been protected by Sol’s ancestors for as long as he could recall. Their allegiance was well-documented. The main reason for taking Max there was that Verdanth had the strongest protective shield in the galaxy around it.

Now they just needed to get there.

Sol’s eyes narrowed. Whatever it took, he would protect Max.

Heads up guys, I can see Wexx Port’s towers…and it looks like we have a welcoming committee. Ochre warned.

>   Six sets of dragon eyes pierced the gloom with their enhanced vision. Sure enough, as they flew closer, they made out a troop of soldiers surrounding the Port’s main dockyard.

Under ordinary circumstances, the dragon knaves would have enjoyed the trip to Wexx. It was a great town, with a pleasant waterside area dotted with great eateries and pubs. Shops displaying a variety of items were also prevalent, giving the place a bustling air about it. Not today. As dusk faded into night, even in the dimming light it was apparent that the usual traders had shut up shop, leaving hordes of weapon-clad warriors guarding the port.

Plan B? Jayde suggested, grinning viciously.

Sol chuckled to himself. The soldiers were not of Vexxillon. They were clad in the armour of Syrrus’s invading force. Perfect targets.

Plan B indeed, gents. With a growl of his own, he swung away from the port with his precious cargo, who slept through the new danger.

Hoo-yah! Raven screeched out his battle cry, swooping low and emitting a great whoosh of black flame which shot from his gaping mouth like a water cannon on steroids. The blast laid waste to dozens of the invaders. His roar of triumph resounded over the town.

Toasted traitors! Indigo swept down after his comrade, sparks of lightning zapping hundreds more unsuspecting victims who immediately began to wriggle and writhe like a bowl of maggots. Toasted maggots.

One by one, the five dragons descended on the army below, soon wiping out any sign of their existence. Job done. With a victorious scream of victory the quintet soared after Sol to where the real escape ship was hidden. Syrrus must think they were complete idiots.
