The last slide is the best one. It simply says, “Because I love you too much to spend another minute without you beside me.”
Teary eyed, he turns to me, nodding his head. “Yes. Absolutely.”
He sweeps around the table into my arms as he wraps his arms around me. I hold him tightly knowing I’m one step closer to making him mine for forever.
Epilogue I
Aiden
Eight months later
“Miguel has been acting odd all week. I don’t know what’s up with him. At first, I thought it was the new account we just signed on, our biggest yet,” Taylor high fives me across the table, “but that’s not it. We’ve had that in the bag for a while.”
“Maybe he’s going through manopause?” I look at her blankly.
“Tay! I’ve told you that’s not a thing. Even if it was, Aiden isn’t old enough for that to happen.”
“The age difference here is pretty steep, hun. He’s what, almost forty-three, right?”
“Yeah. Oh, wait. I wonder if he’s nervous about his birthday next month. Maybe he’s afraid it will bother me.”
“With the way you two go at it, I don’t think the almost twenty-year age difference is the issue. Maybe there’s something else. Just ask him.”
I eat the salad in front of me, the food hitting like lead in my stomach. Taylor agreed to meet me here because I was too nervous to stay home today while Miguel went into the office. It’s Saturday, but he had a few files that needed signing.
“I guess. Who knows what his deal is? I’ll find out when I get home I guess.”
Taylor nods and we make small talk as we finish lunch. She walks me the few blocks back to my place, hugging me tightly before she scampers off.
I ride the elevator up to our place, using my key to go inside. “Hey Miguel, you back -?” The words die on my lips as I look around. There are candles lit on nearly every surface and rose petals spread out all across the room. The lights are dim and I’m not sure I’m even breathing at this point.
“Aiden, baby? Come here.”
In my shock, I didn’t notice Miguel in the middle of the room wearing my favorite suit of his. The custom piece hugs his body just the right way, showing off his large frame perfectly. My body moves toward him as my eyes roam his body hungrily.
“There will be time for that later. Well, depending on how this goes.”
“On how what goes? What is all this?”
“Oh, baby. You have to know by now.” He drops to one knee, his hands grabbing mine as he looks up to me. My eyes water as I look down at him. It’s suddenly crystal clear what is happening.
“Aiden. You are hands down the greatest thing to ever happen to me. I’ve spent years angry and alone with only my business success to fuel me. But not anymore. Now I spend my time at work wondering how soon I can end my day to get to you. You are the love of my life. I want to grow old and build a family with you. What do you say, baby? Will you marry me?”
I launch myself into his arms, my mouth connecting with his in a kiss I hope portrays everything I’m feeling. When I pull back, his eyes shine with joy. “That a yes?”
“That’s a hell yes! I choose you, always. Over and over again.”
