Realms of Mirrors and Demons: Fae Witch Chronicles Book 4 Page 20

by J. S. Malcom

“They could,” Beatrice says. “Or they could choose to turn her.”

My blood runs cold at the thought. It's something I never could have imagined, but Beatrice is right. Vampires do sometimes mete out punishment that way, essentially creating an immortal slave in the form of a subservient fledgling. Autumn could remain that way for decades, possibly centuries.

I wipe a tear from my cheek, and my voice comes out just above a whisper. “What can I do?”

Again, Beatrice hesitates, although I’m not sure why. “Well, it seems we have a witness,” she says. “She might be able to help prove your sister's innocence. We wondered if you might work with her.”

“I don't understand,” I say. “Why wouldn't she just tell the coven?”

“Because she's not inclined to trust witches. Certain witches, in particular.” Beatrice looks toward the surveillance camera, nodding to someone observing us. “Please send her in,” she says.

A moment later, a buzzing sounds as the door at the back of the room is unlocked. The door opens, and I suddenly understand why we've been sitting in the dark. To save my sister, I'll be working with a vampire.

A supernatural world alongside our own. A paranormal enemy we face without knowing. And only one woman with the power to stop the threat.

Autumn Winters can suddenly see into another world, one full of supernatural beings that can't possibly exist. But another window has opened within her, bringing memories of when her sister also displayed magical abilities. That was just before her sister went missing, and she hasn't been seen since.

Autumn believes there must be a connection between what's happening to her now and what happened years ago. Determined to discover the truth, she sets out with the mysterious private investigator, Ian, to track down who was behind her sister’s disappearance. What Autumn doesn't realize is that she’s coming into her powers. And when the powers of a veil witch awaken, there are those who'll be waiting. Getting closer to the truth only means getting closer to danger.

  Author Note

As always, I very much enjoyed creating another adventure for Cassie. Although, I have to say, this one got a little bigger than I originally expected, which forced me to end in a bit of a cliffhanger. Try not to be too mad at me, dear reader, I’m already busily writing the next book in the series (with plans for one more to follow that). I’ll roll them out just as quickly as I can, I promise! If you subscribe to my newsletter, I’ll let you know as soon as they’re ready and will almost certainly make them available ahead of publication for beta-reading, if you’re interested.

Once again, I’d like to extend a very special thank you to those who were kind enough to “beta-read” this book. Your opinions and your eagle-eye devotion to helping me catch edits and errors has been greatly appreciated! So, thank you to Carmen Repsold, Jennifer Mantura, Debi Deason, Deborah MacArthur, Marja Coons-Torn, Patti and Patrick Winters, Rachel Karfit, Lacey Lane, Lori Kis, Susan Warr, Andrea van der Westhuizen, Tammy Baker, Diane Changala, Tamara Ingram, Maria Mybeck, Jana Gundy, Joe Stanelle, Kim Brown, Tammy Gowen, Sharyn Rainbow, Jenine Hightower, Heather Price, Judith Cohen, Gary Webber and Vicki McCreary. Many thanks also to Kim, Darja and Milo at Deranged Doctor Design for creating such stunning book covers.
