“Do you wish for the gift of gnaris?”
Forster glanced sideways at Elena, and thought he perceived a slight nod.
“Yes,” he whispered.
“Are you willing to diminish the sight of your eyes in exchange for gnaris?”
“Yes,” he said more firmly.
“Then let it be so.”
A flash of light passed from the eyes of each of the gods towards Forster, and instantaneously he felt the power of gnaris wash through him. At the same instant, it seemed that a curtain covered his eyes, and his sight faded forever. He sensed the gnaris of one close to him, and thought it conveyed a message, I love you.
“You are now an honorary Karavec.”
“Thank you, great god,” he said.
“Though you have the appearance and mind of a human, you possess the power of gnaris, which makes you the equal of any Karavec except the members of the Council. Are you willing to submit yourself to one who is on the Council?”
Forster glanced again towards Elena, and smiled as he spoke. “Yes, I am willing.”
“Now you deal with the traitor Joodrow,” the god instructed him.
Forster accepted the knife from the Great Savant, light passed from the eyes of the gods to Joodrow, and then Forster slashed through the neck of the co-pilot. Joodrow’s body collapsed into a heap before the gods.
“There is one more issue to be resolved,” Kingirow said to Barrow.
“What is that, great and mighty god?”
“One must be chosen to replace Lolena as a member of the Council.”
“Who do you choose?”
“We choose Elena,” the five gods boomed in unison.
