  Prologue:

This is the follow-up novelette to The Venom of God.

The tall female figure with long dark-hair appeared before the Archangel. She drew her thick broadsword, took a knee and, holding the hilt with both hands, placed the tip into the ground.

She slowly let her high, white wings lower and become still.

A sudden wind came in and her hair flew back, followed by her crimson red cloak. Cyreen tiled her head down and waited for her coming judgement.

Michael, the tallest of celestials, who wore but simple flowing white robe, looked down upon her.

“I would have not let you perish,” he explained, as Cyreen kept her head down and her eyes closed. “Do not fear my concern as to who set you free. That aspect does not matter. The question is what shall we do with you now?”

She did her best to keep Len’s image from coming to her. He was under her veil and if she left it alone, he would be okay. After all, it was he who released her from the binds of the very Archangel speaking to her now. She kept quiet, whatever her fate would be; she was ready.

Michael knew the immortal angel kneeling was compassionate. She was also the perfect subject to keep an eye out on things developing on Earth. “Your ego had gotten the better of you, yet you served your time almost to its planned end, though now you meddle with others not of your sphere.”

He wiped his long black hair away from the front of his face and closed his eyes.

Cyreen knew. He knew about her veil already. She wanted to shake her head and just expect what she had coming. The Archangel surprised her when he asked her to stand.

“I know you mean well, and aspire to be more. That I do not hold against you. So, today, I now name you once more, Angel of Mercy.” He smiled at her as Cyreen finally opened her eyes and looked before the greatest angel under God. For he was the Prince of Light, and if he so forgave her ... forgiveness was finally something she could perhaps finally came to terms with.

Then Michael surprised her. “You, my child of light, are now the Angel of Mercy only for me!”

Cyreen was not all that sure of this different title, be it for him only?

Michael reached out to her and she gave him her hands. Then it all began to make sense as a vision was shared with her master.

“On Earth as it is in Heaven, we strive to offer compassion to all those that embrace the Lord’s essence. Here God was lost. Gone for close to a millennium, but now discovered once more.”

Their journey, in vision, led to a land beaten up by war and greed, yet still in hope of reforming and again, one day, prospering.

“It is here, in a place known formerly as America that you shall now look upon. I want you to offer mercy to those in need and to give out compassion.”

Cyreen had no idea about this Earth place, she had seen many planets in her long life but never was this one she sought out. Their vision led her to a group of women. These females were a sisterhood, as it appeared. Living, working, and fighting for a better world for those among them.

She thought to herself, yet Michael heard her thought, “This should be easy enough!”

The Archangel replied, “Nothing is easy young lady. If you desire peace, and aspire to give hope, the trek is often difficult.”

She then she saw creations of man; metal robots, artificial intelligent machines, and those things that would never have a connection to God. It was those human men who directed these things, and suddenly she had an uneasy feeling within.

Michael knew the task before her. He smiled. “So, you may think this will be a quest easily completed at first, however, let me warn you. Forgiveness goes to many, not just those you admire.”

Cyreen hesitated at such deep words. What did he mean by that?

The angel before her, he who radiated a powerful energy, an aura she was soaking in at this very moment, added a final thought. “There are those here in the celestial world, and on earth, that deserve as much forgiveness as any. Ones you may judge ill-favored on sight yet are not unworthy.”

Cyreen looked up to Michael now. Their eyes met angel to angel.

“Cyreen...” He spoke calmly now, wanting her to listen very closely. “There are even our kin. Yes, our own; those that may appear on Earth. Just remember, it is forbidden to show one’s true self to mortals!”

It was then that Michael pushed back a curtain-like cloud and waved for someone, or something, to advance. Cyreen saw fire appear and, as the thing drew closer, she spotted a very large flaming bird. It was a phoenix; a very special, heavenly creature.

The tall archangel placed his palm up before the bird looking back to Cyreen. “I give onto you this companion. His name is Intina. He will be your loyal traveling partner and he is my special gift to you.”

The creature was magnificent! He burned with beautiful hues of orange and was sculpted in a form of art. His wings, his beak, and his talons exquisite to be behold. Cyreen was honored at such a gesture. She bowed to both Michael and the bird. “Thank you, thank you, very, very much!”

Michael then backed away, with wings fully up, and rose to the blue sky above them. He called down to her, “You have your freedom, your mission, and your title once more. I bid you farewell lady Cyreen, and I wish you well.”

He began flying away and when just barely out of sight she heard him, one last time, echoing across the heavens. “God is watching you, and so am I. You, Cyreen, are now the Light of God! In fact, let’s just call you Light!”

Cyreen heard his final words, Light. She did not know what to think of such a nickname.

Intina walked closer to her and leaned his head in. Cyreen felt his heat lower and the fire on his body slowly faded. She was able to pat him and felt a bond instantly form between them. It was one of a special nature that settled within both of their hearts.

She then thought to herself once more, “The Light of God, huh? That’s a new one!”

  Chapter One

For Cyreen, she felt as though she had a truly amazing mission. Yet, she was not sure what it exactly was.

She was going to have to go to Earth sooner or later. But first, she needed answers. Why would the Holy Ghost, Michael, ask her to take part in the vision without there being a reason close to home?

She knew an investigation was at hand.

The highest sphere of the heavens was not one she needed to search or look in on. Seraphim, the Overseer, did not deal with such petty matters. For it was his duty to regulate the heavens; this small situation was certainly not being played out with him.

So she sought out dominions, asking about any other angels interested in earth as of late. She received no answers as to any names. Then it was on to the virtuous ones. These angels of grace were bringers of God’s blessings to planets far and wide. Again, no one had heard of any such brothers or sisters with great interest in earthy matters.

Even her initial conversations with The Powers, those who regulate the fallen ones from taking over galaxies, offered up no clues. She had hoped for more information, at least a starting point. Yet, inclinations were still not at hand.

So it was onto The Layers. Someone had to know something on at least one of the seven.

She first went to the closest domain near earth itself.

The Archangel Gabriel’s twin angel guides, Kator and Kalma, assured her
that no one here was at play on earth below. She could hardly say if these twins were male or female. These two loyal followers were very feminine in appearance, yet, at the same time, they emitted a masculinity that offset the feminine features. It was as if they held the best of man and woman in a perfect balance. Both served her fruit and played lovely music as to ease her travel time. The twins complimented her on her beauty and calmness. Kator proclaimed, “You, my white dove, are the quintessential essence of purity and have my respect.”

She thought his words sweet, yet, she really would not call herself all too pure.

Kalma explained, “Teach those you encounter that the love is always the answer, and in such beauty, all will live brightly in the eyes of the Lord.” He then offered a thought about openly. “You walk these clouds of white with grace and dignity; give onto others what you have, and all shall find healing from your very touch.”

Cyreen was overwhelmed with their niceness but, she still had no answers.

IT WAS LATER THAT EVENING when she entered the second layer; a realm which held a cell of darkness for one who had fallen from the Lord’s favor. The guards about were always on the lookout for any who entered such a place. Scouting parties were hard to avoid.

It was then one such group came upon Cyreen.

Seeing such a patrol, creatures with a dark gray skin and wings of black, made the companions sure that this was no regular search team. They were looking for something, and low and behold, she and Intina were sure it was them.

Intina sent out a sonar wave of energy right away, testing their theory. It was just a few moments later when he turned, and with his telepathy ability, spoke to his new pal announcing that these so-called dark soldiers were definitely not friendly.

The celestial woman shrugged her shoulders offering her thoughts out loud, “We could run, we could disappear. Go somewhere else, perhaps, but there are undoubtedly answers rights here upon this encounter.”

The large bird beside her outstretched his thirty foot wingspan. He had agreed with her, and the two of them prepared for whatever these dark fallen creatures had in store as they came forward.

But just as they were getting even closer, they vanished.

Intina scanned about, but could see no one. Yet he felt their presence still. “They are still around us, I can feel them; each is merely invisible.”

Light waited for what was next. Fighting angels was no easy task but she, too, was able to sense them still about. Through her own abilities she formed a vision of true seeing and now could see that their wings had turned into some sort of tentacles; tentacles that were made into barb like suction areas... so much for a chance at conversation and clues.

It was obvious that someone out here did not want them to find any answers.

There were a dozen of such creatures and they surrounded the pair from above. At first they were easing their way down, their tentacles flowing about. Undoubtedly each was ready to suck the life force from Intina and his new master Cyreen.

“Be warned,” the young angel now heard in her mind, “for these creatures that many refer to as Cloud Reapers will not only lash out, but try and drain constitution. In the end they desire to become you!”

Light was swallowing hard at Intina’s mental words, but ready to fight.

She regulated her breath upon hearing this and within seconds her sword was drawn, pointing to the enemies about. Intina was now flaming orange and red, he too prepared to defend against the Cloud Reapers.

No one could surprise her elite bird companion. The Reapers tried to cross over one another’s movements but the duo was ready and prepared. A pair of the creatures came in on their first wave of attack, swirling about, as Intina slashed out with his long claws ripping into the jelly-like flesh of their tentacles. The beasts screamed in agony as the phoenix then grabbed a third one, biting into its cheek and ripping its face apart.

Tentacles also lashed out at Cyreen. She ducked underneath and slashed at one with her own blade, directly across the stomach of the evil angel. Another tried to latch on to her left side, but she kicked it in the face and drove her sword right down its open maw.

Why had they just attacked them without any reason or rhyme? This she did not know.

Another trio of creatures appeared from behind them. Intina, however, was ready and spun about breathing a massive flame from his mouth coating all three in fire and sending them back melting and burning; crying out in despair.

Others came from the right, each coming down from above to gain first attack. Many altogether dove in and tentacles tore into Cyreen; her soft flesh ruptured.

She immediately felt waves of dizziness and illness, as her strength and constitution were being drained. Yet, she fought on, swiping her blade across the tentacles that were now sucking into her, severing them in many sections. She broke free and rolled to the left back up to one knee, her sword still in hand.

Intina continued to burn flames out of his mouth destroying others to their left. Even still, more from that way wailed from above zooming dove down at Cyreen trying to overwhelm her.

The bird immediately jumped and was flying out towards them, clawing and biting and ripping at their tentacles. Several had now stuck into him now too.

He did not wait, he admired the woman now being semi-pinned to the ground, and he had to defend her.

The Cloud Reapers almost had Cyreen fully held down and immobile, but as Intina got there this all changed. She got her sword arm free and lashed out killing more of them. He tore at the backsides of the creatures and soon all were down, or flew off in serious injury.

The Angel of Mercy fell to the ground. She was so dizzy and badly wounded. Intina placed his wing over her wounds and slowly her cuts and injuries came together and the damage and poison vanished. She was healed from the touch of the Phoenix.

She was still breathing quite heavily from fighting twelve or so of these awful fallen angels; those that had been demented from the very grounds they dwelled in. Soon, the raven-haired angel calmed down enough to thank Intina. “My friend, if not for you I would have fallen.”

He let his flames go down again and she patted the bird, “Thank you so much! Without you, I don't think I can go on. There certainly seems to be more than meets the eye with these seeking’s; you are a worthy companion Intina, and I thank you again so very much.”

In her head she heard, “You are most welcome my lady, it is an honor to serve the Angel of Mercy.” He then bowed his head to almost touch the ground. “I say we go on, with no fear brave lady!”

  Chapter Two

The border between heaven and hell was separated by a flaming river. It was at the very banks of such Cyreen now stood.

She was looking about debating if either direction could be beneficial. It was such a deep thought process that it left her open for an attack. The thick broadsword struck her in the back of the leg. Her knee buckled and she fell forward to the ground. Palastine stood over her, a grimace on his face.

“Whoever you are, your meddling has come to an end! Cease your search or the next time I will destroy you!”

The pale, black-haired angel turned about looking up now. He was of her tall height, but wider than most angels. He was scared from battles with very noticeably damaged wings as black as coal.

She called for her own broadsword and it was in her hand instantly. Palastine was pissed and sliced down at the fallen woman. Cyreen parried his blow raising her blade up as the steel of the celestials rang together.

She was tough though, and rose to her feet walking back some once they separated. The monster over her had simply stepped back after her deflection as well.

She looked to find Intina, how was he suddenly just gone?

“Who are you?” The black winged monster shouted at her.

Her name was not one she wanted this beast to have; knowing one’s name gives another power over you. She was too smart of an angel to fall for his question. So she answered, “My name is Light.
” It was all she could think of at the spur of the moment. Michael had told her she was the Light of God, and she just blurted out “Light.”

  The lieutenant of Lucifer snarled.

“Bahhhh, you offer a fake name and search the layers looking for those who have claim to a situation on earth. You are more than you give away.”

He then twirled his sword about as if he would again come at the white-winged angel, one he was all eyes on. “Tell me the truth woman, or face your death now!”

  Cyreen offered him a choice.

“Leave me alone and I will be on my way. If you choose to engage me in combat I will offer you no mercy. You have no reason to attack me ... unless you’re guilty of hiding something?”

The Venom of God’s top soldier answered to no one, be it his master, and he never liked choices. He roared, “YOU WILL BE OBLIVIATED,” charging at his prey.

The large Angel now with crimson red flesh slashed out as Cyreen moved about dodging his initial attacks.

Then appearing, finally, was Intina. He had turned invisible, but all that mattered was her companion was present.

He immediately spread his wings and inflamed his body at its highest level of fire.

Palestine called out as he and Cyreen continued to try and get an advantage over one another. “Do not hate the messenger, for I have come to deliver you a warning.”

His words made, she who called herself Light, to raise her hands up towards the fiery bird above telling her friend to hold off before attacking.

Palastine slowed his assault as well. He was surprised at how this female angel was with talent. He had never imagined her any good in combat, for he was a champion of the highest nature. “I do not know why you travel the additional layers. I sense that you two are at odds with what you seek. You fight well too, for that I offer compliment.”

The agent of hell then offered a wicked smile. “You actually think a fire bird can burn and harm me?” He implied, nodding his head at Intina. “His powers will not affect me.”

He lowered his black sword, “Let me just say, there is nothing here for you woman, and as a young celestial you walk on very dangerous ground. If you continue a search in which you are not sure exactly what you seek, your immortal life will end soon.”
