  Acknowledgments

This is the hardest acknowledgments I’ve had to write, purely because I’m not sure where to start. Once Upon a Sunset has left me vulnerable, perhaps because it touched on history, both told and untold, identity, and home. What I am sure of, however, is that the support given to me in the writing of this book has been immeasurable.

To my fierce and kind agent, Rachel Brooks, who champions my dreams, and my brilliant editor, Kate Dresser, who just gets it and gets me. I have been so lucky—no, blessed—to have you both by my side for five books. With Once Upon a Sunset especially, which I consider thus far a legacy above all. You both did this for me, for my family. I am so grateful.

Molly Gregory, Mackenzie Hickey, Jen Long, Jean Anne Rose, Abby Ziddle, Tara Schlesinger, Christine Masters, Erica Ferguson, and the entire Gallery team—thanks for being amazing! Michelle Podberezniak, thank you for fielding every email and question with such patience. To Kristin Dwyer of LEO PR: you are a beacon of optimism and professionalism. Ella Laytham, thank you for my truly stunning cover; it is only matched with such gorgeous interior design by Davina Mock-Maniscalco.

My squad: April, Annie, Rachel, Stephanie, and Sidney. #Thermostat/#Batsignal. #5amwritersclub. #TeamBrooks. Tall Poppy Writers. You have made this writer’s journey so damn fun. Special thanks to Jasmine Guillory, Susan Mallery, Jennifer Probst, Nina Bocci, Kristy Woodson Harvey, Amy E. Reichert, and Kate Meader for lifting up this baby author.

Tito Bonjoy and Daddy, who shared so much of Lolo with me. Ate Hazel and Maida Malby for your generous time. Karen and Mindy, who shared their family history with me. Jez from the Ayala Museum for my one frantic email. I am indebted to you all.

My brothers, JR and Racky; my sisters, Connie, Aimee, and Liz; and my mom-in-law, Cheri—I love you! To my parents, who allowed me to get on that plane solo to the Philippines so long ago, and then trusted me when I handed them Army enlistment papers to sign before I even turned eighteen: thank you for letting me fly.

I am so absolutely thankful to readers, bloggers, librarians, and reviewers who have boosted and supported my work. You are who I write for.

My children, my Fab Four—always know, especially from this book, that you are not alone, and You. Are. Enough. Finally, to Greg, who completely supports the idea that the entire main floor of our home is my writing office, who is my partner and my best friend: iniibig kita.
