  I jerked my eyes up. I hadn’t noticed him watching – but then, I’d been so caught up in the joy of being back on Stormclaw that I probably wouldn’t have noticed a dragon following us around.

  “So, what do you say? Can I tell the rest of the team you agreed?”

  I thought it over for about half a second. The chance to spend the whole summer hanging out with Stormclaw and the other gryffs – and get paid for it?

  “Count me in.”

  “Great.” A frown flickered over his face. “But watch out for Xavier’s gryff. Wildwing’s got a real attitude problem.”

  “Like owner, like gryff,” I muttered under my breath. Ryder chuckled.

  “See you around, Lyssa. Have a good summer.”

  He headed away from our table, and a thought struck me.

  “Wait,” I said, and he turned back. “How did you know I would pass?”

  He shot me a wry grin. “Are you kidding? You’re a badass, Lyssa.”

  “Uh…”

  Before I could decide what to make of that, he wove his way back to his cluster of friends. Apparently, I’d developed a reputation. I sighed, resigned to the fact that trouble really did find me wherever I went. And then I smiled. Because really, what was life without a little trouble?

  As I fell into easy banter with Zara and Kyle, I knew one thing for sure: if this year was anything to go by, my time at Krakenvale was never going to be dull. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

  I’d thought coming here had been the greatest mistake of my life – and let’s be fair, it had some pretty hot competition – but instead, I’d found something I hadn’t known I was looking for. A calling.

  Life was never going to be the same – and I couldn’t wait.
