"And if you're lucky someone will get murdered," Raine added.
I shrugged. "You said it, not me."
"All in all, it was a successful trip," Lola said. "I found a few hidden treasures, and Lacey got to do her favorite thing, track down killers. Guess we'll both have something to tell everyone back home. Although my Brown Brothers Pottery won't be nearly as exciting as the twin switch."
Raine sat back with her muffin. "I can't believe Minnie killed her own twin sister. I mean, it's horrible and, yet, kind of brilliant. Etta did have a beautiful house and full bank account. Still, it's awful. What a—"
"Witch?" Lola asked.
We burst into laughter.
"I think we absolutely all have to get together again," I said. "This has been way too much fun."
Lacey nodded. "I agree. Best trip I've taken in years."
After a long session of good-byes, Lacey and Lola climbed into their rental car and drove toward the airport, and Raine climbed into her car and headed to Lana's house to make table centerpieces for an anniversary party. I waved and watched everyone drive off, giving myself a few minutes of fresh air before having to head inside and write the story about Etta's murder. It was quite the doozy. I'd let Parker know I'd be writing it instead of an article about the flea market. He was fine with the topic switch, especially after I told him the outrageous tale of the twin sister switching places.
Edward appeared next to me on the front stoop. I peered up at his handsome profile as he stared out at the world he could never walk through again.
"You, my friend, were smitten," I teased.
He continued to watch the car as it turned into a dot and then disappeared for good. "Perhaps. She was just interesting, funny."
"And pretty," I added.
"That too."
"I must confess, I'm feeling envious," I said. "I thought, at least for this century, I was the woman in your life."
He spun around and faced me. "Now you know how I feel when that thick haired, presumptuous scoundrel comes prancing into the house."
I couldn't contain a smile. "Is that why you're always in such a rotten mood when Jackson shows up?"
"That, and perhaps you missed the part when I called him presumptuous and a scoundrel?"
I pointed at him. "No backtracking. You're jealous."
"Fine, does that make you feel better?" He drifted toward the house and disappeared through the door.
"Yes," I said quietly to myself, "yes it does."
