As he got closer, he noticed that Kalen had the other perp in electric cuffs. Jinx had knocked this one unconscious. Shy was leaning over Jinx, who was lying flat on her back. He saw the bruises and his gut clenched at the pain on her lovely face. She tried to sit up.

“Don’t move Jinx. Isaac is getting the first aid supplies.” Shy gently pushed her back down.

Jinx looked up at Drake. “Are you okay?” she asked.

That was just like her, checking on others first. God he loved her. It hit him like a ton of bricks. This small female with multicolored hair had won his heart in such a short amount of time.

He knelt down on her other side and gently touched her cheek. “I’m in better shape than you. Why did you decide to take down a tree from the top first?”

Jinx laughed then groaned in pain. “Things happen around me, but I caught the bad guy.”

He smiled at her. “You sure did.”

Isaac sat down on her other side. He took out a handheld medical scanner. It would let him know what her ailments were and propose treatment.

“You have a lot of bruises and your ankle is sprained. I don’t detect anything internal, but I’m not a paramedic. You’ll need to go to a hospital to be thoroughly checked out. I can give you something to ease your pain, but it will only last a few hours.”

“Please, I would appreciate it,” Jinx said as she reached for Drake’s hand. He squeezed it reassuringly. As Isaac injected a needleless air pressurized pain medication, the lines of pain eased from her face, and Drake felt that tightness in his chest ease with it.

“The authorities are on their way.” Shy told him.

“Good. As soon as they get here we can take her to the hospital.” Drake said.

  “I’m okay,” Jinx mumbled.

Drake raised her hand to his lips and kissed it. “Humor me beautiful. I would feel better knowing a doctor has taken a look at you.”

Jinx twitched her lips as if to argue with him but then her eyes softened. “Okay.”

Drake smiled at her easy agreement. She must really be hurting, or she saw his concern and responded. The sirens signaled the authorities approaching. Bending over, Drake lifted her in his arms carefully and stood up with her.

Walking to the van, he noticed the truck tires. “You did a good job sabotaging their ride.” There was no response. He glanced down; Jinx had passed out. Her chest was rising, her breathing was even. She was the most precious cargo.

  Vic approached, “How is she?”

“Okay, except for cuts and bruises. We need to take her to the hospital immediately so she can be fully checked out.”

Vic got into the driver’s seat, while Drake sat on the second row so he could hold Jinx. He leaned down and whispered in her ear, “You did great babe, but don’t scare me like that again.”

Her lips moved up in a smile, but she didn’t say anything. Jinx rested peacefully in his arms and Drake knew he would never let her go.

  Chapter 21

It had been two weeks since she had fallen out of that tree. She had gone to the hospital and was treated for two days. Then she went to stay at Shy’s for a week of recovery. All the bounty hunters took turns checking on her. Drake had argued with her about moving in with him.

“I want you with me,” Drake said grouchily.

“That’s moving too fast. I don’t think we’re ready for that yet.”

He wasn’t happy with that, but accepted it temporarily. However, every night Drake came over to Shy’s and he took care of Jinx, and slept with her in his arms. It had been so special and it only solidified how she felt for him. The idea of eventually moving in with him was growing on her.

The next week her mother came to visit. Her mom was quite taken with Drake and the two of them found they had something in common—their concern over Jinx’s new profession.

“Jane Jean, couldn’t you do a desk job or something?” Her mother had asked as they walked to the park across the street from Shy’s apartment.

“I’m good at what I do, and I love it. I promise I’m being careful.”

  “Have you had many...accidents?”

“Surprisingly, not as many as you would think.”

They sat at a park bench and enjoyed the heat from the sun’s rays. “How are things going with Drake?”

Jinx felt color rise to her face as she thought of the last time they had made love, right before her mother came down. They hadn’t had a chance to make love in days, and her body was seriously craving his.

“It’s going good. We’re taking it one day at a time, getting to know each other better.”

“I like him for you. You two complement each other. I know he is worried for your safety, but he doesn’t try to keep you from doing what you want.”

Jinx smiled. “He’s amazing. Mom, I have never felt like this for anyone before and it’s exciting, but also a little…”

  “Scary?”

  “Yes.”

Her mom squeezed her hand comfortingly. “You’re in love, honey. I know it can be scary, but it’s worth all the risks.”

Wanting to change the subject, Jinx asked, “So how are things going with you and Leo?”

This time her mother was the one who blushed, “Better than I could have imagined. I never realized how considerate Leo was, but he makes me feel wonderful.”

“You deserve to have someone who treats you like that. If he hurts you, I’ll have Drake beat the shit out of him.”

They laughed and enjoyed their day. When it was time for her mother to leave, Jinx felt sad to see her go. But Drake was there to comfort her.

Life didn’t just fall into place easily. They had issues to work out. For one thing, her position as a new bounty hunter was something they discussed at length. Drake would have rather she had a safer position, but he still supported her following her dreams. He didn’t interfere—much.

Her feelings for Drake grew and grew until she had to confess how she felt. They were at his apartment and had just made love.

“Drake, I need to say something.”

“What is it beautiful?” He leaned up on his elbow to look at her.

She hesitated, “I’m willing to move in with you.”

“That’s great. We’ll grab your stuff in the morning and bring it back here. I promise you won’t regret it.”

“Drake, that’s not what I really wanted to say.”

His fingers caressed her face and his eyes softened looking at her. “You can tell me anything.”

She just blurted it out, “I love you. I don’t know where this will go. I’m not sure if it will last, or if I’ll drive you crazy. You may get tired of my accidents or—”

Drake cut her off with a kiss. Her tension eased and she felt nothing but love inside for him.

When he pulled away, Drake smiled down at her, all of his deep emotions showing, “I love you too honey. We’ll take one day at a time. Besides, your mom told me what your grandfather would do to help your grandmother, relaxing her and reducing those pesky accidents she used to suffer.”

Jinx felt the heat rise to her face. “I can’t believe my mom would tell you that.”

Drake nuzzled her neck, kissing her skin. “She likes me and wants us to work out. It gave me ideas of what I can do each night and each morning to keep you safe.” His kissing trailed down over her collarbone, over the curve of her breast.

She gasped when he took a nipple in his mouth. “What kind of ideas?”

Releasing her nipple with a pop, Drake looked down at Jinx, his love for her in his eyes. “It’s better if I demonstrate them for you.” He proceeded to pleasure her until she couldn’t move at all and nothing accidently broke or burned down—for a while at least.
