Ashes to Ashes (Barbie the Vampire Hunter Book 3) Page 32

by Lucinda Dark

Ducking behind the desk, I rummaged through the drawers. Papers. Ink quills. More papers. Seals. But no purse. No money. No coins. No nothing! I grew frustrated the longer I searched, clenching my hands into fists as I huffed and snarled, digging through what was left in the drawers. But of course, I still found nothing more than dust and more parchment. My stomach rumbled, reminding me that I’d refused to eat the stuff they’d called food earlier. Hunger made me that much crankier.

Slamming the last drawer shut with a curse, I gave up on searching the Abbess’ office. I should’ve known better, I thought as I headed back into the hallway. What with the wars down south and the famine from last year’s harvest, the nuns weren’t likely to have just any extra coins lying about. It was a ridiculous notion to begin with, one born of panic at my nearing homelessness. My strings would be cut, and I’d be left with nothing but the clothes on my back—going back into the world practically as I’d come into it. I mean there were worse things, right? I had my looks, but I’d heard about what happened to pretty young girls who didn’t have anywhere to go, and I had absolutely no intention of being a kept woman. Maybe. Probably not. But then, what did being a kept woman even mean?

As I thought about it, I did hear that they, at least, got to sleep in. Maybe that wouldn’t be so bad. I’d always rather sleep in than get up at the asscrack of dawn like the nuns required us to.
