by S. L. Stoner

To the extent this series accurately reflects history, that is due to those who have done their best to preserve the past. In particular, I want to thank the staff of the Oregon Historical Society, the Portland City Archives, the Multnomah County Library, the Cascade Geographic Society, the Mt. Angel Abbey Library and the San Francisco Maritime Library. These organizations deserve our gratitude and our support. Special thanks also to Ross Reiter of the Pacific Northwest Labor History Association for his untiring efforts to preserve and share labor history. In Oregon, Jim Strassmaier, through the Oregon Historical Society, has pulled together a squad of oral historians who are trying to preserve the people’s narrative. It is not only that ignorance of history dooms us to repeating it; there is also the fact that our ignorance robs us of the opportunity to celebrate the lives and victories of those who came before us. Working Americans are the continuation of a proud tradition, one that created those American characteristics best loved by the world.

This book in the series received special assistance from Sally Frese, Joel Rosenblit, Helen Nickum and Denise Collins. Many heartfelt thanks to each of them, particularly Helen and Denise who read every single word with care. And, special thanks are due Debra Murphy, of Pearland, Texas, for her willing and able assistance in the final stretch. Any remaining errors are solely my own.

Family members and friends, both old and new, are the loving foundation of this series. Fortunately, they number too many to name here without forgetting someone. I hope as they read this and other books in the series, they see themselves in the characters: their own beauty, intelligence and humanity mirrored back to them.

Last and most important, the greatest credit goes to George Slanina, whose unwavering support, kindness, and pithy observations make this series possible.
