“He said he owes you big time but last time he let you have whatever your filthy heart wanted you chose me. He said this time you would probably want to be president of the club and he’s not ready to give that up just yet.”
Hmm, not a bad thought. I shift my head from side to side. Jesse narrows her eyes at me before smacking me in the arm. “Okay, okay. I have everything I need right here.” I wrap my arm around my girls.
Dan, Raffe and Rachel come in next. They ooh and ahh over Billie. She looks so small when Dan holds her. He takes her over to the rocking chair and cradles her close to his chest. Jesse wipes her eyes and looks away. Dan is special to her. I know my cousin will protect our baby with his life.
After everything settles down Jesse takes a call from her friend William. They talk for at least an hour as I rock Billie, unable to take my eyes away from her chubby little cheeks. She stares back. I wonder what she thinks of me. I hope I’m good enough for her.
Jesse ends her call, so I take Billie over to the bed for another feeding. She latches right on. She’s going to grow like a weed as much as she likes to eat. Jesse snuggles down in the covers laying her head against my chest. I rest my chin on her shoulder, both of us admiring our little girl.
“I’m so happy,” Jesse says tiredly.
“Me too.” I run my finger over Billie’s soft cheek. “So, when can we do this again?”
She growls at me.
“Too soon?”
“Yes, too soon.” She drops her eyes back to our daughter. “I can’t wait to take her home.”
The baby blinks at us as if she is listening and maybe she is.
Jesse turns to look at me. “She’s perfect. She has your mood ring eyes.”
I run my thumb over Jesse’s bottom lip, leaning in and placing a kiss on her lips. “She has your old soul.”
“You think?” Jesse looks back at the baby.
“I don’t think. I know.”
Billie Rose is going to be one of a kind…just like her mother.
