Afterwards, as we lay in bed in a sacred embrace, my feeling was that we were already married in our hearts. So, I opened up a little more. “I remember something from my old life I never forgot. My first human life, I mean.”
Cuddled in my arms, she lifted her cheek from my chest and asked, “Yes?”
“My mother said, it’s always the quiet ones. It still rings very true. You’re a beautiful, boisterous lover, Jaimie.” I sniggered and she pinched my nipple.
She rolled on top of me, her low laugh seductive and arousing. “Fabien, no other made me feel like you do. I don’t know how I breathed for so long without you.”
Tears in her eyes, she fell down in my arms, fretful and emotional after so much soul-baring sex. I felt very weak, too, and scared of losing her. I’d do whatever I could to never let her shine wane, to let her know she was always loved, and to keep her safe in my arms for the rest of our time together. However long this lasted, I was hers, and she was mine. Always.
EPILOGUE
“DO YOU THINK she’ll ever find out?” Voice Two said to Voice One.
“No,” said Voice One, “vampires mourn for centuries, remember? They have that luxury and their years are not the same as human years. Like Fabien did for Juniper, Leticia could wallow for three centuries yet. By the time Leticia’s well again, she’ll have outlived John’s human life and he’ll have had the happiness he was always meant to have.”
“But what if she discovers… he’s alive… and human?”
“Won’t happen.”
“Could.”
“It’s unlikely.”
“You think he really believed it when we said she was dying… more or less, dead?”
“Why not?”
“Vampires don’t die. Especially ones like Leticia.”
“We rewarded him with a second life, we didn’t give him full immunity. There’s always an element of risk in life.”
“He saved all those marriages? York’s men were hornier than a dog in a field full of bitches after he’d had done with them. It seems cruel to make him a mere mortal again, after all he achieved?”
“Look at him; he’s never been happier!”
“You just like the entertainment, don’t you? Watching him and Jaimie together!”
“Maybe.”
“Well, I still think this could all blow up.”
“Could.”
“But you think it won’t?”
“Nope. I believe it won’t. They’re far away and Leticia is still wallowing in her self-pity. By the time she comes out of it, the vampires will be diminished.”
“What if she regains herself in centuries to come and say, starts biting again?”
“Some people might fall victim. It’s a risk, yes. We can’t get rid of her altogether, just weaken her. We learned that before, remember? She always comes back. She’s more powerful than any of us.”
“But she keeps them in check, doesn’t she?”
“To an extent.”
“To an extent. So basically, nothing is certain?”
“Nothing.”
“That’s life?”
“Nothing is set, nothing is certain. What we are born, we don’t die as; how we live, isn’t who we are. Fairytales don’t exist, and life isn’t about that one, true love, it’s just about whether the chances people are given are taken… and whether when redemption comes along, it’s grabbed with both hands.”
“Bullshit.”
They snickered, together.
“Equilibrium doesn’t mean equality, fairness. In a way, we need Leticia. She’s the only one the other vampires fear.”
“We’ll see… I think you just like playing with them, like pawns.”
“We will see… but I believe. I really believe these two will make it, don’t you?”
The voices agreed to disagree and cackled, side by side, watching as John/Fabien and Jaimie/Juniper married on a Hawaiian beach, surrounded by two little girls, with another two (boys) on the way.
