by J. A. White
From within the boy’s Bright came the chugga-chugga-chugga of an approaching train. A whistle blew. The boy listened with interest. The black triangle stopped closing and began to open again.
“It’ll be here soon,” Cordelia said. “You don’t want to miss it. Who knows where it will take you?”
The boy drifted upward. This time, he didn’t fight it. He gave Cordelia a wave, as though he was just going on a fun trip and would be back again soon, and she waved back. At the last moment, he looked down at Mr. Derleth, and Cordelia saw sudden recognition illuminate his eyes. Hey, Daddy! he mouthed. It wasn’t with sadness. The boy didn’t know sadness anymore. He ascended into the Bright, but just before the triangle closed Cordelia heard his voice for the first time.
He said her name—and goodbye.
