“I shall be by your side.” Victor didn’t sound very worried. He was a one in a million guy, but in some ways a very typical male. His dark eyes shone with desire as he glanced at Daphne, but at the same time he was wolfing down sweetbread and talking with his mouth full.
“Merry Christmas!” Just then Uncle Bertie and Vera Chang and a half a dozen other top models from the London fashion scene burst into the room. All of them were in holiday spirits, laughing and poking each other with devilish grins. But fat little Bertie wore an outraged look as his gaze fell on Daphne. “Where the hell have you been, baby? I could’ve sworn I texted you hours ago to get down here. I’ve been looking all over for you!”
“You didn’t text me,” Daphne protested. “You picked me up yourself in your limo, don’t you remember? We got here together not more than half an hour ago!”
Bertie gave Victor a wink. “You’ve got a crazy woman on your hands, mate. I don’t have any idea how Daphne got back to London. I’ve been here all night, just ask Vera!”
“It’s true,” the exotic beauty purred, clinging to Bertie. She was clearly in on the joke. “We’ve been here all night long, raising money for charity. Someone else must have brought you back to town, Daphne. Maybe Santa Claus brought you in his sleigh!”
Everyone was laughing, but when Daphne looked at Victor his eyes were dark and shining.
“Christmas is a time of miracles,” he told her. “You are mine.” Just then a burst of music swelled from the outer dining room. Suddenly everyone wanted the Christmas couple to dance.
“You’re my miracle, Victor,” Daphne murmured, putting her arms around his neck and gazing deep into his eyes. “You’re my Christmas flame.”
“This flame burns only for you, my love.” Victor held her very close, his big body warming hers as they danced. In a moment Daphne knew he would kiss her.
His eyes were sparkling with untold promise like the sky on Christmas Eve.
