A Soldier Saved--A Clean Romance Page 23

by Cheryl Harper

  Oh.

That was no casual hug. That was a show of arm strength. The eggs were impressed.

  By the wrong Monroe!

Panicked, Emily disentangled herself from her least favorite Monroe and marched toward the house.

“Cake,” Jonah said, hot on her heels. “Isn’t cake normally reserved for after dinner? It’s what? Four thirty?”

“You can do anything on your birthday.” Gertie grinned at Jonah the way she used to grin at Shane when he was paying Franny attention. Her widowed sister-in-law and Shane had ended up engaged, although not because of Granny’s grin.

“Barking up the wrong tree, Granny,” Em mumbled as she hurried past her and inside, hanging up her hat and pulling off her boots. She needed to wash up and change before cake.

“I’m thankful I’ve got trees to bark at,” Granny teased. “Jonah, dearie, I thought you weren’t moving in for another day or so. What brings you by?”

“Cake,” Jonah said, as big as brass.

Emily gritted her teeth as she traipsed to her room.
