The Girl Who Became a Beatle Page 20

by Greg Taylor

Julian nodded his head slowly in surprise when he heard that. “Really? You want to play me some of your own tunes?”

I nodded my head slowly in return.

  “That’s big.”

I raised my eyebrows—in an Abernathy kind of way—that said, Yeah, for me, it is.

Julian frowned suddenly. “Don’t take this the wrong way, Regina. ’Cause I really, really want to hear your songs.”

Oh, no. What was Julian going to say? What could be more important? Julian let the moment hang, then said, “It’s so beautiful outside. Want to take a walk first? Before it all gets spoiled?”

A deep, inner sigh of relief. A huge, outer smile of happiness. What a wonderful idea!

I told Julian I’d love to take a walk in the snow with him, so we put on our jackets and boots and went outside where everything was fresh and beautiful and new and white. It reminded me of that Calvin and Hobbes comic where they go outside after a big snowfall.

Hobbes says, “Everything familiar has disappeared! The world looks brand-new!”

Calvin says, “A new year … a fresh, clean start!”

Hobbes adds, “It’s like having a big white sheet of paper to draw on!”

Calvin exclaims, “A day full of possibilities!” Then he adds, “It’s a magical world, Hobbes, ol’ buddy … let’s go exploring!”

And that’s exactly what Julian and I did.
