  Grandma said, “That will be up to your mother, Annie. But don’t go getting your hopes up again.”

  But my hopes were way up there. I stood in front of the bathroom mirror for the rest of the afternoon, practicing my smiles. I would practice my signature later, because I’ll have to give out a lot of autographs when I become a famous person.

  I was up to Smile #3, the no-teeth-showing one, when Grandma announced that the cake was ready. I stopped practicing my smiles for a cake break.

  Grandma had already iced the two layers in chocolate frosting, and filled the pastry bag with creamy gold icing. I squeezed the icing through the tip and made little gold stars all around the edge. Then in the middle, I practiced my first official autograph.
