  Sundowner – An alcoholic drink taken at sunset (British English, informal).

  Suttee – A widow who committed sati (a former practice in India whereby a widow threw herself onto her husband’s funeral pyre).

  Tart – A female who is attractive and has the air of being promiscuous, even if she isn’t.

  Tartan – A woollen cloth woven in one of several patterns of plaid, especially of a design associated with a particular Scottish clan.

  Trunk call – A long-distance telephone call for which the caller must pay an extra amount of money (British, old-fashioned).

  Tureen – A deep covered dish from which soup is served.

  Veld – Open, uncultivated country or grassland in Southern Africa. It is conventionally classified by altitude into highveld, middleveld, and lowveld.

  Walloping – A beating.

  ‘What the blazes’ – Used in various expressions of anger, bewilderment, or surprise as a euphemism for ‘what the hell’ (informal).

  ‘What the dickens’ – Means ‘what the devil’; expresses irritation or shock in a question.

  ‘Ye Gods’ – Used for showing that you are very surprised or annoyed (old-fashioned English). A less offensive way of saying ‘Oh my God’.
