Boomer's Fall Page 27

  “Thank you,” he whispered.

  “For what?”

“For giving me a second chance at happiness.”

She folded her arms and propped her chin up on his chest. “You’re welcome,” she said and then yawned. “I am so tired. I haven’t slept in weeks.”

“Before you drift off I want to tell you something.”

“Okay.” Her eyes were so heavy she couldn’t hold them open. “I have to pick Raya up at school by three so don’t let me sleep too long.

“I’ll pick her up so you can sleep.”

“Umm she’s not at her regular school. They’re having class at another location,” she said yawning again.

  “I know.”

“You know? What do you mean?”

“I followed you when you took her. I know exactly where she is.”

“Just how long have you been in town? And why did you follow me?”

“I got into town this morning in time to see you leave so I followed you. Nothing malicious, I was just concerned about Raya.”

“I’m too tired to get upset about that. What was it you wanted to talk about?” She stretched like a cat as his fingertips ran up and down the naked flesh on her back.

“I found a private school that would be happy to have Raya. It’s close to the base.”

She opened her eyes and looked at him. “You what?”

“Don’t get mad. I was just hoping that you might want to come back with me. If you did Raya would need a school.”

She wasn’t mad, not really, just shocked. “I can’t afford a private school.”

Boomer rolled to his side, lowering her down on the mattress. “Together we could,” he said brushing her hair away from her face.

“Together?” What was he saying? Her brain was so fried she couldn’t comprehend what he was saying.

“Together we can put her through school. Together we can give her everything she needs. Together we can all be happy.”

“Together as in living together?” Now she was feeling something new, an excitement in her heart that made her lightheaded.

  “Hannah, come back with me.”

“What about my job, a place to live? You want me to pack up everything I have and take off with you?”

“We’ll find you a job. If you want to go back to school that’s great. You’ll have the chance to do it. You can live with me if you want. I’ll get rid of my dingy apartment and buy a house. Something with a big yard so Raya can play. Maybe even get her a dog to romp with. Or you can get your own apartment. It’s up to you. I’d prefer you two live with me but I’ll be happy just having you around.”

Moving? Was she ready for that? Was she ready to live with him? Instead of being nervous and anxious about the thought she was giddy. Then she looked into his eyes and knew right then that this was what she wanted. Waking every morning and seeing that look in his eyes that said she was the only woman for him, his laughter, his humor, his security, his love.

  Was there really any question?

“What kind of house? A big one or a little one?” she asked.

He rolled her up onto his chest and kissed her hard. “Any kind you want. I’ll build it with my bare hands if that’s what you want.”
