The shadow took shape and form, leaned into her...its snarl changing to a soft, almost questioning growl...it was a man, and yet--not. The burning ache settled low in her belly. She shuddered and kicked out.

Hair sprouted from the man's face, in a kind of surreal time elapse. She heard his jaw crack and bones pop as he grew taller, wider, into a monstrous myth.

The elongated muzzle sniffed the crook of her neck...a wet tongue licking her shoulder... She lashed out, doubling her fist and striking the creature on its snout.

The thing had ripped off her clothes, torn at its own, until they both lay there panting, naked.

Another spike of pain lanced through her veins and she gasped. Her hands cracked, shortened.

  "Querida, no!"

"Javier? Ohmygod! Is that you? I thought it was you at first, but I thought you were dead! What have they done to you?" Her voice sounded wrong, high-pitched like a yip.

"Shh. Do not fight me...allow this. The only way." He flipped her onto her stomach and pushed her knees under her to tilt her at an angle.

"What are you doing?" She began to tremble. He was Javier...and yet not.

"Trust me." His voice was an inhuman growl to her ears.

He flicked her clit with a curved nail and she flinched, squirmed as the heat from his body covered hers. He leaned over her and, without warning, grabbed a fist full of her hair. He pulled her head back, then clamped his fangs on her nape and bit down on the uninjured side of her neck. At the same time, she felt him rub the head of his cock between her legs, then thrust into her from behind. The sudden, sharp, double pain of his teeth, along with the ache from his rough, unlubricated entry, sent her reeling.

  "Too much. It hurts--it burns!"

"Focus on me. On my cock, claiming you, making you mine," he growled, his breath hot against her neck.

  "Javier...please...I can't..." She trembled.

"You must. Stay with me, mi vida." He reached between their bodies, rubbed his knuckles in a circle around her clit, until she whimpered and started pushing back, grinding on his shaft. Her nipples tightened into points.

"Yes. Take what you need from me."

"Hot, so hot," she gasped, churning her ass against his groin.

He altered his angle and dug in deeper, drawing a moan from her lips. So close, oh, God, so close. The heat spiraled out of control. He let go of her hair and lay his palm on her ass, guiding her hips. He clenched his teeth on her nape a little tighter and shook her, his thrusts hard and fast, pounding her in a frenzy.

She cried out, begging, pleading. "Javier! Yes, yes..." She panted, out of breath as her orgasm shook her to the core.

"Mine!" he half-shouted, half-growled. His cock spasmed, hot jets of his seed filling her. After a few minutes, he rolled off her and pulled her into his arms. His mate. Her eyes were closed. He had stopped the change. Already the tufts of hair that had formed around her ears receded. A newly made werewolf, she would keep her human form until the next full moon. He would need to prepare her for her new life.

Any minute Sanchez and the others could find them. She needed to dress. He rubbed her nose with his own, stood, and gathered their clothing.

"Can I...ask you something?" Her voice was breathless.

  "Of course."

"What are you?" She studied his face, still part human, and touched her own. Did she look the same?

  "Hombre lobo."

  "Lobo means wolf, right?"

  "Sí. Hombre lobo--werewolf."

"You bit me. Am I a werewolf now?"

  "Sí. My mate."

"And when I wake up tomorrow, this won't have been some weird dream, right?"

"No, mi vida. No dream. You are in shock. I will explain everything. And I will always be here for you." He handed her clothes.

"Because we are a mated pair?" She dressed best she could given the scrap he'd made of her clothes.

"No, bebé. Because I love you."

Her smile wobbled. She was very close to tears. "Guess I'm lucky you saved me then, since I love you, too."

She wrapped her arms around his waist and leaned up on tiptoe to kiss her handsome wolf.

Cassandra Curtis started her writing career in grade school. She would illustrate and write colorful stories using magic markers, crayons and sheets from her alphabet tablet, and sell them to other school kids for a penny. While the venture didn't make a lot of fast money, it did mean she could indulge her love of comic books and not spend summers behind a lemonade stand with her sisters.

She spent her formative years traveling the globe with her parents, learning a smattering of languages--usually just enough to get her in trouble. After college, she worked as a reporter and photojournalist at a weekly paper, then a daily, while continuing her love of art. Ms. Curtis now writes fiction full-time.

An avid gardener and wildlife enthusiast, she enjoys the magick found in nature. Her interests include: art, antiques, astronomy, folklore, mythology, genealogy, music, eastern philosophy and collecting magickal artifacts. A member of both the World Romance Writers, and Romance Divas, Ms. Curtis won the 2006 Amber Quill Press Heat Wave Contest with her story Cup of Fate. She lives in the magickal land of bluegrass known as Kentucky.
