It tears me apart when I leave them in the hospital room alone. The sooner I update grim, the quicker I can return to my girls.
“Bomb!” Shouts Grim as soon as he answers.
“VP.” I greet.
“How is everything? You a dad yet?” He asks.
“Has she had the baby?” I hear Lauren in the background.
“I just asked him.” Grim answers his Old Lady.
Laughing, I let them out their misery. “Yeah.” Taking a deep breath and fighting emotion I continue. “I have a daughter.”
“A girl!” Grim shouts and I hear girly screaming and in the background. “Congratulations man.”
“Thanks.” I laugh. “Although, I’m thinking she’s going to be hard work.”
Grim laughs loudly. “It will be fine brother! She has lots of men around her to look out for her.”
“Yeah, I think I’ll be committing murder in the future.” And Grim laughs loudly.
“I’d be the same if I had a girl.” Grim mumbles.
We end our phone call after Grim starts to tease me about my future troubles of having a pretty little daughter and I quickly return to Elise and our baby girl. I stand in the doorway, watching Elise as she feeds her. It’s a perfect picture and one I never want taken away from me. I haven’t even been back to the Black Ring since Elise told me she was pregnant. As soon as I found out I was going to be a dad, I didn’t need it anymore. The anger had gone.
“Can you lie her down?” Elise asks me, completely wiped out.
Our baby girl has fallen asleep after her feed, her soft yellow blanket wrapped around her. I carefully pick her up from her mother’s arms, gazing down at her.
“So, are we still naming her what we agreed?” I ask her. We settled on baby names a couple of weeks ago, one for a boy and one for a girl.
“Yep.” Elise sighs, settling herself in the bed and resting her eyes.
“You go to sleep.” I kiss Elise and she sleepily kisses me back.
“Yes sir.” Elise grins with her eyes closed.
Not wanting to put my baby down, I hold her close and sit in the big chair beside Elise’s hospital bed. I can already hear her quiet snores.
“Hello Madison.” I greet my daughter, she’s sound asleep and I lean in close. Breathing in her baby smell. “You are going to be one trouble maker huh?”
She stirs a little, making adorable cooing sounds only a new born can make.
“I’m going to make you a promise.” I whisper down to her. “As long as you be good to your mum and me, I won’t be so harsh but you gotta understand. Daddy is going to be working hard fighting all them boys away and I’m sorry to say, they will not get anywhere near you baby girl. It’s better you understand that now so there’s no arguments later.”
Madison begins to stir in my arms and I shake my head, laughing quietly.
“Yeah I thought you’d fight me on that.”
I cradle her close, and watch her closely as she drifts back off to sleep. I vow to her right there and then that I will do my absolute best by her however the longer I watch her sleeping my arms, the more scared I get for what’s to come.
Shit I have a daughter.
It’s going to be a lot of work fighting off those little fuckers, but my baby is worth it.
