He shrugged. “What are we without our homes?” he asked, glancing pointedly at Chateau Falco behind us. He let out another breath as Asterion and Death approached, listening politely. “I am the overcomer of obstacles, boy. Thought you would remember that…”
Then all three vanished, leaving me alone at the base of the tree.
I sighed, thinking about the crazy adventure behind me, and those hinted at to come. I quickly dropped that line of thought, already too depressed to consider more dangers coming in the years (hopefully) ahead.
I was single, having unwittingly destroyed the relationship with the woman I loved.
But I had saved a kid that no one else had been willing to save.
My last family member had betrayed me.
But I had saved my friends. And made new ones. Ganesh, Rufus, maybe even Shiva.
I had poked a stick in the eye of some pretty big enemies: the Fae, and the elusive Syndicate.
And then I thought about Baba and her Familiar. But I had healed some past enemies too.
I had made some new friends, both physical, and metaphysical. I glanced up at Chateau Falco, thoughtfully.
I took a calming breath, slowly nodding as I turned to the tree. To find Carl standing a foot away from me, sharpening a milky blade in his fist. My heart practically exploded in my chest.
“Fucking Carl! You trying to scare me to death?” I roared, panting.
He kept right on sharpening his blade for a few moments. “Now, what did the red one say about Ravens?” and he winked darkly at me.
I felt myself smile…
I hadn’t lost everything. Sometimes you needed to take what you can get.
“Carl, I think I’m going to go play with my new toys.”
“Yes, Master. Which new toys are you referring to?”
“Grimmtech…” I glanced at his blade. “Perhaps you have some ideas on weaponry.”
A smile even darker than the first split his face. “Oh, yes. I have many ideas…”
We turned to head back to the house, and I saw that Othello was standing in the driveway, staring at me.
I blinked at the stunned look on her face. “What’s wrong?”
She just stared at me for a few more moments. “Do you have your cane on you?”
I frowned, and glanced down at my hip. I remembered setting it down on the table. Before…
I looked up sharply. Whatever she saw in my face made her shoulders sag in despair. Then she spoke, but I already knew. “She took the cane. She didn’t come back to make peace. She came here to distract us. Get us out of the office. So she could take your cane…”
I couldn’t think of an expletive foul enough to express my emotions, so I just stared back.
Indie had stolen my cane. My Beast. Likely to give to Ichabod…
But to what end?
Ichabod, the last Maker on earth, prime candidate for some god to recruit for the upcoming war that I knew nothing about, had not only one Beast.
Now he had two…
Nate Temple will return in June of 2017…

About Shayne
Shayne is a man of mystery and power, whose power is exceeded only by his mystery. In other words, a storyteller.
Shayne currently writes the Nate Temple Supernatural Thriller Series, which features a foul-mouthed young wizard with a chip on his shoulder attempting to protect St. Louis from the various nasties we all know and fear from our childhood bedtime stories.
