I shook my head trying to get used to my new balance. Major licked the top of my face and then rolled on his side in front of me. Laughing as best I could, I studied him. I didn’t understand what he was doing until my tiger spoke to me.
He submits to you.
What? The great white tiger of Alaska is submitting to me? A clumsy photographer with nothing in her life to brag about. Me? Lonely Fiona wishing she could start all over.
Major flipped his tail back and forth waiting for me to do something, but once again, I didn’t understand.
Bite him.
No!
Show your dominance.
I had a feeling this animal thing was going to take a while to get used to. Giving in to the tiger that seemed to understand the signals better, I let her take command. She stomped her feet several times and then opened her mouth wide. Dropping to Major’s neck, she took his most vulnerable spot between her jaws. For a second, I worried she might harm him, but she simply mouthed his fur, telling him she was in charge and she accepted his submission.
When finished, Major rolled back up to his feet and jerked his head toward the awaiting crowd on the other side of the trees. I nodded and followed him as he walked past the truck and weaved through the pines. In the clearing up ahead, I could smell bear, wolf, and cougar. There was something else lurking in the woods, but I couldn’t yet identify the scent. My tiger told me to ignore it for now and instead focus on the strange animals in front of us.
As I stepped into the meadow, Kenzie and Emma greeted us first. Emma was about to burst with her and Brandt’s twins and since Kenzie was pregnant too, they couldn’t shift. “Wow,” Kenzie breathed. “Fiona, you’re magnificent.”
I bowed my head in embarrassment and Emma laughed. “You definitely are dominant.”
Not sure how to react, I focused my attention on the shifters in animal form. Calvin approached me first. As a cougar, he was smaller, but I certainly sensed his power. I almost wanted to submit, but my tiger wouldn’t let me.
He sniffed at my haunches and slowly circled behind me. We didn’t like showing him that side, so the tiger forced me to turn and face him. He huffed and shook his head. Then he stepped forward and nudged the side of my neck. Was that some kind of signal? Probably, but I didn’t know what to do. And I couldn’t figure it out because Derrick was up next. The werewolf seemed so much smaller now. As a man he was huge and intimidating, but as his animal, he didn’t compare to my tiger. I felt a little guilty for wallowing in that feeling but Derrick would get over it. He simply gave me his back before walking over to Kenzie and Emma.
Then it was the grizzly’s turn. Zane bounded forward and put my tiger on alert. Major growled at him as I prepared to pounce. Zane ignored my mate’s warning and instead ran at me full force. Just before he would have knocked me to the ground, I leapt into the air, using his back as a launching pad. As I soared, he growled at me but I kept my eyes forward. The sheer power in my own legs had me celebrating my new life. How nice it was to be so strong.
When I landed, I slid in the mud and turned to face everyone. Zane had changed back and was holding his left shoulder. “Shit, Fiona. Watch those claws.” He pulled his hand away and I smelled the thick, copper scent of blood.
My stomach rumbled.
Zane heard it too, and his eyes widened. “No way, Fiona. I am not food.”
Everyone behind him, including a now human Derrick and Calvin, laughed at the fear seeping from his voice. I continued to smell the blood.
But then my beautiful mate, stepped in front of me. “Fiona, maybe you should change back.”
I looked around him at Zane and licked my lips.
Major chuckled but continued to block my view. “As tempting as it is, I think you’ll hate yourself if you let the tiger feast on Zane.”
I shook my head and sat. Looking up at Major, I tried to portray that I wanted to know how to change back.
Thankfully, he understood. “Remember, just think about being human again.”
So, I did. I thought about the last several days and nights with Major and how I would hate to lose the ability to have sex with him. I thought about the wonderful meals he’d cooked us and the way we made plans about me opening a gallery in town. I remembered how he’d saved me and how that decision had haunted him for days. And I thought about how amazing his naked body felt against mine and how badly I wanted to feel that right now.
Before I realized it, I’d shifted back into a human. Smiling with delight, I jumped to my feet and launched myself into Major’s arms. I slammed into him as he laughed and spun us around in circles.
“I did it! I did it!”
“You are amazing,” he whispered into my ear.
“I love you so much!” Kissing him over and over, I felt like I simply couldn’t get enough.
Major stumbled backward and a split second later we were lying naked in the mud. He laughed an honest laugh that warmed everything inside of me. All of his fears sank into the mud below once he assured himself I was okay.
With my face in his hands, he kissed me softly. “I love you, Fiona.”
“Good, because you’re stuck with me now.” I lowered my lips to his and felt that incredible electrical heat race between us again.
Someone cleared their throat and said, “That’s our cue, folks.”
I vaguely noticed them all leaving us alone while my hands roamed my mate’s naked body. Major continued to laugh with each kiss I placed on his skin until he finally squeezed me tight.
“I love you, forever,” he said.
I sucked in the scent of him and my new home that surrounded us. Forever with Major. I think I liked the sound of that.
“Forever,” I whispered, kissing him as the sun started to set and our life together began.
