Untitled Page 69

by Wendy Bayne

She passed me the veil, it was cool and smooth to the touch as it cascaded across my hand like water. She watched me smiling then she pushed the second box towards me. I opened in and seated in a bed of black velvet rested a silver circlet of woven ivy leaves and roses, just the size to wear as a tiara. Lady Bruce had tears in her eyes. “This was delivered to my brother by courier just before we left London, he asked me to give it to you this morning. It’s from the Marquis Du Quenoy, he was so sorry that he couldn’t be here, but he wanted you to wear this; Miles’ mother wore it at her wedding, he said you could return it when he comes to visit in the spring.”

I took a deep breath as I stood up and gave her a hug of the purest joy! Then she let go of me, turned to the tray lifting the covers and inhaled. “Mmmmm, I’m starved!” She picked up one of the forks and began to eat.

My life was complete. I had a family, friends, an exciting future and a man that I adored above all else. Still there was much that needed to be explained and dealt with; but today was my day, mine and Miles. Mr Allan had ordered it so and Mr Allan had never been wrong.
