More splinters fell onto the bedroom floor and stuck in the thin carpet. Each fist pound fed Paul's headache. He turned to Wendy and lifted her chin with two fingers. She looked up at him through puffy, bloodshot eyes. The light coming through the vent above glistened off her colorless cheeks.
He pasted a smile across his face. “Hey, at least it's not vampires."
She stared at him and then laughed.
