Dragon Her Feet Page 12

by Mina Carter, Celia Kyle

“I know, me too. But at least you’re getting a kick ass apartment out of the deal, right? And, hey! Now that you’ve mated Joey, you get free airfare for life. You deserve a high five for that one.” Honey held up her hand and Katie smacked it in return.

“I didn’t mate him for the dragon ride,” Katie drawled.

Honey giggled. “But I bet your dragon rides good, doesn’t he?”

Katie rolled her eyes and groaned. “Such a bad joke.”

“Another thing you’re gonna miss about me.” Honey rested her head atop Katie’s. “You’re also gonna miss—” her best friend shoved Katie away and pushed to her feet, racing to the wall of glass. “Tell me I’m not seeing what I think I’m seeing.”

“That depends, did somebody slip you something again? I told you to stop taking candy from strangers.”

“Seriously though, come look. Because I’m pretty sure you’re about to have visitors thirteen of them. Well, really twelve because Joey lives here but seriously… You have a shit ton of dragons inbound.”

Oh hell no. Katie followed Honey’s path and stood beside her, and she was unable to believe what faced her. Because really, there were thirteen dragons—twelve black and one pure white—skimming the surface of the ocean and headed right to their building.

“I’m so going to kick his ass.” Katie spun away from the window and stomped toward the back of the apartment. Joey had a private stairwell directly to the roof built in their place so she didn’t have to go tromping through the hallway to get to their sanctuary.

She ignored the sound of pursuit, letting Honey and Blake make their own way. She raced up the winding staircase and burst onto the roof just as the first of the blacks fluttered their wings and came to a soft landing. The moment those massive claws touched the solid roof the change rippled over him.

In the moment skin and clothing replaced those black scales, he was striding toward her an apology on his lips. “Sweetness—”

Katie held up a hand. “Don’t sweetness me. Who are all these dragons? And why are they coming to my house?”

  “Technically—”

She shook the hand she still held high. “We are not dealing in technicalities here. We’re dealing with the fact that I have twelve dragons that are almost to my doorstep.”

“Well, you see…” Joey’s attention strayed to the white dragon now fluttering nearby and carefully and delicately landing on the roof.

The gentle ripple of the queen’s shift glittered over her in a subtle glow until she was revealed. She wore a long and flowing Greek style dress, her golden hair curled in tiny ringlets that fell down her back. If she didn’t know the woman with the dragon, she would think of the queen as a Greek goddess. She was just… beautiful. She returned her attention to Joey and noticed her mate was staring.

Katie reached up and snapped her fingers in his line of sight and snared his attention once again. “Focus here. Why do I have all of these dragons at my house?”

  “Sweetness—”

“Aww, that’s a cute nickname.” They both slowly turned their attention to the queen. The woman smiled widely and Katie was gratified to see she wasn’t sporting her dragon’s fangs. “As for what we’re doing here, it’s a housewarming party. You know, chatting with friends, getting to know one another, maybe a little food…”

Katie bared her little hedgie teeth at the woman not caring that she could snap her like a twig. “Hedgies are not on the menu.”

Joey groaned and wrapped his arm around her shoulders, steering her away before she could snarl any other threats at the queen.

  “Sweetness…”

“Did you invite them? Who does she think she is?”

  “Queen of the dragons.”

“Just because she’s some snooty queen it doesn’t mean she can—”

  “Yes, it really does.”

Katie harrumphed and allowed herself to be escorted down the stairs and into the apartment, Joey at her side. “Really, why are they all here?”

Her mate dragged her into the master bedroom and pulled her into his arms, snuggling her close. “Because they’re happy for us. I am the first black dragon to ever mate.” He dropped a kiss to her nose. “The fact that you love me and mated me gives them all hope that they can find the same happiness.”

Katie narrowed her eyes. “I never said anything about loving you.”

“But you do.” The next kiss wasn’t short or sweet. It was deep and passionate, filled with the fire of his dragon, and it made her knees weak. “You very much do.”

Okay, maybe she did. Just a little. At least until he left his boxers laying around and—

Joey captured her lips into yet another seductive meeting of their mouths. She’d finish yelling at him later. Much, much later and after several discussions of who loved who.

Honey loves running her bar and grill, catering to humans and shifters alike. But there are two things that dim her love of the place: cocky assholes who think they own the world, and cocky assholes who think they can flex their muscles and wreck her bar when throwing a temper tantrum. Unfortunately, the drop-dead gorgeous, hotter than hot, shifter man she secretly loves is both.

Blake wants the curvaceous, gorgeous Honey in his bed. Now. He’s lusted (but not loved, let’s get that straight) after the luscious woman for months. True, he looks like a bad-boy biker mixed with a player and, yeah, he’s broken a few things in her bar… But only because the guys were hitting on his girl. With no hope of winning her over in sight, he does what any red-blooded werehedgehog would do in his position. He lies.
