Immortal of My Heart Page 25

“The one and only. I was calling to tell you your tour canceled, so you have the day off. I don’t think the two college kids were ready for the great outdoors, just yet,” he snickered to himself.

“Y-your not dead,” she barely whispered.

“Are you alright, honey?” TJ asked with concern lacing his voice.

Kaelyn smiled with watery eyes. “Yeah, TJ. I’ve never felt better.”

“Well okay, you enjoy your day off. We’ll see you tomorrow bright and early.”

“Tomorrow,” she said, hanging up the receiver. Kaelyn swallowed. She couldn’t wipe the grin off her face. Everything had been a dream. Nothing had been real. Going back in time, dealing with Cain, trying to escape Rowena…. Kaelyn’s smile disappeared. Meeting fantastic new friends, doing the unimaginable, finding the one exquisite man that fit in her heart so perfectly. “Alexander,” Kaelyn whispered.

Her hand, on its own accord, went up to grasp the crystal it was so used to holding. Kaelyn glanced down. On her finger was the small golden band Alexander had made for her. Her chest constricted as a sob escaped her. “No,” she cried, “no, it was all real.” She knew she’d never be able to run her fingers through his hair or run them over his chest, feel his strong arms wrapped around her….

Hysterically, Kaelyn rushed out of bed throwing on sweats and a t-shirt from the floor. She hopped on one leg trying to pull up her boots. Where should she go? She had to talk to the Fae queen. Maybe, if she could just persuade her-. She had to go back to the Grampians. Perhaps his body would be there.

“Oh God, no, no, no!” she said wiping the tears away from her cheeks. She grabbed her keys from the dresser and ran out of her bedroom straight to the front door. She yanked her fleece jacket from the coat peg and was about to turn the door knob when something stopped her. Kaelyn smelled the air. Bacon. Slowly, she turned around and looked back into the kitchen.

Kaelyn’s breath stopped. Her keys and jacket fell from her fingers, dropping to the floor. She had to be hallucinating.

Alexander looked up from the stove, and out over the peninsula over at Kaelyn. “Where ye going? I thought we’d have breakfast, wife. I’m starved,” he said with a lazy grin. Kaelyn haltingly walked into the kitchen.

  “Y-you’re here,” she said breathlessly.

Alexander leaned over and kissed her on the mouth. He pulled back with a smile that promised much more. “I wouldn’t be anywhere else,” he said softly. “Remember, I said eternity.” He kissed her dazed expression once more, and returned to the breakfast he was making.

Kaelyn stared in awe. He was here. He was real. He was hers. Her chest began feeling back to normal and her breathing came easier. That’s when she realized he stood in black cotton lounge pants, bare feet, and no shirt. Every muscle moved as he flipped the bacon and cooked the eggs.

Her eyes moved to the small red dot above his heart and to his side where Cain had stabbed him. Lightly, Kaelyn reached out, running her fingertips along the edge of one of the scabs. Alexander looked up as the spatula in his hand stilled. “It’s not healed?” Kaelyn asked confused. Wasn’t he Immortal if he was alive again? The wound should have healed by now.

Alexander stared at her for a moment. “Nay, lass. ‘Tis not healed.” Alexander brought up his other hand to run down the side of her face, but she stopped him before he touched her.

“Oh my God!” she cried out. “What happened to your hand?” She examined his hand, holding it lightly between both of hers. A kitchen washcloth was wrapped around his palm and spots of blood marred the cloth.

“I wanted to make sure of something,” he said quietly.

“Of wha-.” Kaelyn paused and stared at him. “Really?” she asked breathlessly.

Alexander nodded slowly as a smile curved his mouth. “Really, lass. Tell me, is that a good thing?”

“You being mortal?” she said as tears blurred her vision. “Aye, my Scottish warrior, that’s a very good thing.”

Alexander leaned down kissing her forehead. “Remind me to thank Hunter’s grandfather.”

  Kaelyn stilled. “W-why?”

“The liquid he gave Hunter and in turn Hunter gave to ye, helped save my life. The Fae queen helped, too,” he said grinning.

Kaelyn blinked in surprise. “I didn’t know what it was.”

“It’s the blood of a Fae.”

Alexander pulled her close and crushed his mouth to hers. He pulled away when wetness touched his cheek. “Lass, why are ye crying?”

Kaelyn looked up at him smiling through blurry eyes. “Because, I finally have a future I’m looking forward to.”

Alexander placed both hands on the sides of her head and leaned in until his forehead touched hers. “Me too, lass…me too.”

  EPILOGUE

Gideon slowly sat up shaking his head. He opened his eyes to a dark room with millions of tiny lights. He blinked a few times. The cavern. He now remembered.

Slowly, he rose, feeling the cold stone walls on all sides of him except for one, where a wall of iron stood. Gideon’s teeth clenched. The Sacred Door. Rowena had put him in the room the orb had occupied.

“Alexander! Kaelyn!” he thundered, pounding on the door. He paused. Nothing. Gideon grew uneasy. Were they dead? Did Rowena and Cain win? Gideon frantically pounded on the door yelling their names again.

After his fists turned bloody, Gideon sunk to the floor. He put his head in his hands. He wouldn’t last an eternity without going mad.

  “Alexander! Kaelyn…anyone!” he yelled. “Help!”

Cain fell through time half-awake, half-asleep. He had pictured a middle-aged woman who was keen in druid magic. He needed to become immortal again. He had to reverse the spell he and Rowena had cast.

Rowena. Cain gritted his teeth. He hoped Kaelyn had destroyed his mother, or else, when he was whole again, he’d come back for the untrusting witch.

Cain grabbed his side as pain shot through his crushed ribs. Without warning, Cain began to free fall into blackness. A night sky.

He shot down, out of the heavens, crashing through a roof and landing on hard ground. Cain opened one eye half-way, fighting to keep it open. He noticed he sat against a wall on a polished wood floor against a table and chairs.

He tried to move and instantly gritted his teeth. Being mortal sucked. His entire body hummed with pain.

“Who’s there?” a feminine voice called out as a light turned on, over a carpeted staircase. “I have a bat! I’m not afraid to use it!”

The last thing Cain remembered, were two long, bare legs poking out from under an oversized t-shirt and a bat raised, ready to strike down. He tensed as he eyed the bat, realizing his body ached, the pain in his ribs was excruciating, and he felt vulnerable for the first time in his long life.
