Battle Cry (Freedom/Hate Series, Book 4) Page 33

by Kyle Andrews

He caught her before she rammed into him, and smiled warmly as he said, “I was worried that you'd run out on me.”

Caught off guard, Marti struggled for an excuse. She finally decided on, “I was thirsty.”

He nodded and looked out the window, “Beautiful night, isn't it?”

  “It is,” she agreed.

She had planned to stab him in his sleep. She'd pictured all of those white blankets turning red. Pillows torn, sending feathers everywhere, sticking to her blood-soaked hands. Obviously, that wasn't the plan anymore.

All she needed to do was catch him off guard and make sure that he didn't scream too loudly before she could kill him. How hard could that be?

Geo turned his entire body toward the window, moving closer to it. He was still shirtless, and his back was to Marti. She stared at his skin, which glowed blue under the moonlight, waiting for her moment.

“I remember the first time I ever came to this place. I was six years old. My parents had a big conference to attend, so my nanny took me to a carnival. I watched this guy being spun around on a wheel while another man threw knives at him, and I wondered how anyone discovered that particular talent. Did they just throw a knife at someone and hope for the best?”

  “I don't know. I've never seen a carnival.”

“We should go sometime. It's... fun. I guess. In theory. If you enjoy oddities and humiliation. At least, most people seem to think...”

Marti stepped closer to Geo, gripping the knife at her side as tightly as she could.

Shaking his head, Geo said, “On second thought, maybe we can just have a picnic in the park.”

“That sounds nice,” Marti replied, not really paying attention to what he was saying.

Her heart was pounding in her chest. She had killed before, but never like this.

She looked out the window as she moved closer and closer to Geo, tightening her grip the knife and preparing to drive it into his back. She was thinking about the amount of force that would be needed, and where she would need to strike in order to avoid hitting bone and wasting her one chance to get the job done.

Slitting his throat would be easier, but he would see her coming. If she had thought ahead, she could have brought a drug of some sort to kill him, but she didn't have anything like that, so it would have to be a stabbing.

She took a deep breath. She was close enough. The knife was in position. She was ready.

Geo turned and looked Marti in the eye. He had a half smile on his face, still as playful as ever. He must not have seen the knife, she figured. Then she felt his hand was on her wrist, ever so gently keeping her from stabbing him.

Still looking at her as though she were the most beautiful thing on the planet, Geo tilted his head just slightly. “One thing I've been meaning to ask you,” he said. “Were you really planning to take down the entire helicopter, just to kill my father?”
